TEMPE – Sun Devil Swim and Dive return to action after a successful 2023-24 campaign that set a new standard for the program. The men's team is coming off its first national title and the women's team continues to blossom into being one of the best teams in the country as the Sun Devils are ready to compete in the Big 12 for the first time under first-year head coach Herbie Behm.
Arizona State is set to open its season Oct. 4 against UNLV under the lights at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center at 6 p.m. AZT. It'll mark the first of seven home meets during the 2024-25 campaign, ending off with celebrating the seniors on Feb. 8 against Arizona at 12 p.m. AZT.
THE SEASON THAT LIES AHEAD:
The season opens with both men's and women's teams dueling the UNLV rebels on Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. AZT. Then welcome Arizona, Northern Arizona, and Grand Canyon for a quad-meet on Oct. 12 set for 12 p.m. AZT for bragging rights across the state.
For the second consecutive year both men's and women's teams will swim against N.C. State on Oct. 25-26 in Raleigh. The Wolfpack men finished fifth and the women finished ninth at NCAA Championships last season. In 2023, the Sun Devil men defeated the Wolfpack 186.5-113.5, while the women fell 130.5-169.5 last season.
The team then returns home to host a tri-meet with familiar foes Stanford and California, the two-day meet is set for 6 p.m. AZT on Nov. 7, and for 11 a.m. AZT the following day. California's men's team placed second at NCAA's, with the women taking 11th. For Stanford, their women placed 5th at NCAA's last season and the men finished 8th.
The Sun Devils will travel back east for the second time in a month. By competing in the NC State GAC Invitational to round out their fall season set for Nov. 21-23.
Returning after the new year, the Women's team will take on Rice on Jan. 3 set for 2 p.m. AZT, in Tempe, and then both sides will welcome GCU in a duel the following day to start at 12 p.m. AZT. Then the following week the Sun Devils will dual Minnesota on Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. AZT.
For the final road trip of the regular season, the Sun Devils will embark on a quad meet with the top swim programs in the country taking on Virginia, Texas and NC State on January 24-25 in Austin, Texas. Lastly, they'll return to Tempe to take on Arizona for a key Territorial Cup Series point on Feb. 8 at 12 p.m. AZT.

IN THE RANKINGS
The Sun Devils are ranked in both the men and women's CSCAA preseason polls announced on Sept. 26. The men check in at No. 6 in the country, and the women are ranked No. 21. Both are the only teams to represent the Big 12 going into the new season.
WELCOME BACK SQUAD:
Entering the season will be 43 familiar faces, with 20 men returning from last year's national championships team, and 23 women returning as Sun Devils entering the 2024-25 season.
The men's team has three returning Pac-12 champions in Jonny Kulow, Patrick Sammon and Ilya Kharun, all looking to repeat their success from a year ago after leading ASU to its second consecutive Pac-12 championship last March. In total, the Men have five returning all-americans.
In addition, Kulow, Sammon and Kharun all won national champions in select relays races. For Kharun and Kulow, it was in the 200 free, 400 medley and the 400 free relay's. Sammon, became a national champion being a part of the 400y free relay.
For the women's team, of the nine that represented ASU at the NCAA Championships, six of them are returning to this year's squad.
The women's side has two returning all-americans, Charli Brown and Erin Milligan. Both swam at the NCAA Championships a season ago, earning 2nd team All-American honors in the 800 free relay. For Brown, she placed in the top 10 in every event she competed in at Pac-12 Championships and competed at the Australian Olympic trials this past summer.
Milligan was named team captain last month and competed at the Olympic Trials this past June. The fifth year is coming off her best season and placed in the top-12 in seven events at the Pac-12 championships (fourth, 200 medley relay, 400 free relay and 400 medley relay), fifth (200 free relay), sixth (50 free), ninth (200 free), and 12th (100 free)
Deniz Ertan returns after placing third at the European Aquatic Championships in the 800m free, she also came in 7th in the 400m free final, respectively. Ertan placed second in the 1,650y free at the Pac-12 championships a year ago alongside Alexa Reyna who placed third in the same event.
Daniel Matheson was recently named to the 2024-25 USA Swimming roster and was selected to compete in the short-course world championships set for Dec. 10-15. Matheson also competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials this past June. Last season, Matheson became an all-american in the 400y IM, 500y free and the 1,650y free at the NCAA Championships.
THE NEWCOMERS:
The Sun Devils welcome 21 freshman and 8 transfers to the team, 12 freshmen men and 9 freshman women. Along with four transfers apiece on both the men's and women's teams.
Caroline Bentz, a grad transfer from Virginia Tech, comes to Tempe as a two-time all-american and swam at the U.S. Olympic Trials this past June. Bentz placed in the top-15 in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, setting new personal bests. Last season, she placed 7th in the 200y back at NCAA Championships. In every season she's competed collegiately, she's competed at the NCAA Championships.
Coming from N.C. State, Miriam Sheehan is also an All-American after placing 7th in the 200y free at NCAA Championships. Sheehan also placed 2nd as part of the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relay at ACC Championships. She also is a former Olympian after competing in Tokyo in 2021.
Michael Hochwalt, a top-ranked recruit comes to Tempe with versatile speed and swam a 3:42.88 in the 400 IM his senior year, which would've been good to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The team also welcomes Oscar Bilbao, Lucien Vergnes and Finn Kemp to the men's squad.
David Young, a 2024 Paris Olympian representing Fiji arrives to ASU as a freshman. In August, he swam in the 50m free in the Olympics. He also was a state champion in high school and set the state record in Washington in the 50 freestyle.
QUAD-MEET FOR THE AGES:
Virginia's Women are coming off their fourth consecutive NCAA Title this past season, and the men's team finished 17th at NCAA. Going into this season, Virginia's women are ranked No. 1 once again vying for a five-peat. For NC State, it'll be the third time this upcoming season ASU meets the Wolfpack, where both Wolfpack teams finished in the top 10 at NCAA Championships last year. The men are ranked No. 5 in the country while the women are ranked No. 11.
Texas men's team finished seventh at NCAA Championships and the Texas women finished runner-up to Virginia at NCAA's in 2024. Historically, Texas has the most men's team titles with 15 and the second most women's team titles (7). In 2024, Virginia became the second team to win four consecutive titles, joining Texas who won four straight from 1984-1988. The Longhorns are ranked No. 3 this season in the men, and No. 2 on the women's side.
RETURNING OLYMPIANS:
The Sun Devils return five total Olympians who have competed in the Olympics. Deniz Ertan and Sheehan both competed in Tokyo in 2021. Tiago Behar, David Young and Ilya Kharun all swam for their respective countries in 2024 in Paris.
Kharun, representing Canada garnered two bronze medals in Paris, coming in the 200m and the 100m fly after coming off a freshman year where he claimed the 200y fly individual title at NCAA Championships. Similar to his teammate Matheson, he'll also be competing in Budapest at the short-course world championships. Kharun currently holds the school record in the 100 fly (44.33) and 200 fly (1:37.93).
DIVERS:
The diving programs welcomes back six returners (Vera Brewer, Kayden Hayes, Amayah Wiley, Lane Stallworth, Alex Burton and Caleb Liban) in head coach Marc Brigg's fourth season with the Sun Devils.
At Pac-12's last season, Amayah Wiley and Kayden Hayes placed in the top-15 respectively, coming in 13th and 15th on platform diving.
In the consolation final, Hayes finished third with a score of 221.80 and Wiley finished eighth with a score of 195.50. Stallworth competed on the 1-meter and 3-meter diving at last season's Pac-12 Championships.
UNDER THE LIGHTS:
Including the home opener against UNLV, the Sun Devils will have their second home meet at night against California and Stanford on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. AZT. It marks the first home regular season meet at night for the Sun Devils since Oct. 22, 2015 since the Sun Devil Women swam against Washington State.
