Quotes
Head Coach Bob Bowman
On having Ilya Kharun as an athlete and his work ethic:
"Ilya is an amazing young man and he comes from a tremendous club, Sandpipers Nevada, who have developed a lot of great swimmers so he has a very strong training background. I feel that he's got a lot of things he can improve on, there are many technical things in the short course that he can improve on to go faster which is great. He works hard every day and is a tremendous competitor in the meets themselves so we're very happy he's here."
On wanting back to back wins for the long and short course:
"Some of our relays were pretty good, they put together some decent relays but our energy was not good in the beginning of the meet which we were trying to work on. Our focus was to try and come out of the gates quickly and we really did not get out there in anything other than the relay. We had a little talk about that during the break, it got a little better, but we're gonna have to keep improving. It's hard when we had a good season last year and everybody tells you how good you are and has these expectations for you. The reality is that was last year, today is today and we have to win today and we have to do better tomorrow, the next day, and the next day because to achieve our real goals, we're going to have to improve quite a bit. That's where we try to keep our focus. I think effort is there but I think there's a difference between effort and really getting the job done under difficult circumstances, and we have to get better at doing that."
On how he has instilled confidence in the team while also keeping them humble:
"When they do something good in training, we really reward that. What we reward is effort. It's not always about the result, it's about the effort because that is what we control. We focus a lot on that and then also I want them to feel good about what we're doing here. They also need to know that there are a lot of people out there working hard who are talented and we're going to be racing them. We're just going to have to improve everyday if we want to really be the best team that we can be."
Freshman Swimmer Ilya Kharun
On mindset going into the rest of the season:
"We just gotta get faster so that we can go for the NCAA record, just to get number one. It was a good start."
On breaking school record:
"During the 100 fly, I was thinking about the school record but I wanted to improve my time. I know that time is great but it's gotta get way better but just am going to keep on improving it."
Graduate Swimmer Jack Dolan
On racing close to Kulow in 100 free:
"It's just like practice everyday, really fun. I love training with Jonny, he's a great guy so getting to do it in a meet everytime we race, it's really fun."
On improvements for next meet on Oct. 6:
"Something we can take into the next meet is being fully prepared, getting ourselves to be the best we can be."
Sophomore Swimmer Jonny Kulow
On confidence for the team:
"I think we're pretty confident but at the same time, I feel like it's a little bit of an achilles Heel. There are a lot of variables that we have to account for. So I think we're doing a good job of keeping our head wrapped around that."
Junior Swimmer Léon Marchand
On what he's thinking about today's meet:
Today I was very proud of Ilya, he did very well. It was super fast and I feel like he was having a lot of fun, that was nice to see. Today was not that good for me, I was kind of far from my best times and yesterday was decent, but it was a good start."
