TEMPE— A total of 11 swimmers (seven pros and four student-athletes) have been named to the U.S. National Team roster for 2023-24.
The student-athletes for the Sun Devils will be senior Lindsay Looney, junior Daniel Matheson and sophomore Jonny Kulow along with junior Dylan Gravley being named to the open water national team.
The pro swimmers include Regan Smith, Olivia Smoliga, Jay Litherland, Ryan Held, Chase Kalisz, Hali Flickinger and Drew Kibler.
Athletes qualified for this year's team by being one of the top six fastest eligible swimmers in each individual Olympic event from Jan. 1, 2023 through Sept. 9, 2023.
Student-Athletes
Dylan Gravley- Open Water
Gravley competed at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka back in July as he competed in the men's 5k finishing with a time of 57:20 finishing in the top-30. This was Gravley's second year in a row competing at Worlds where he competed in the 10k in Budapest and finished 13th.
Jonny Kulow- 50m freestyle
This is Kulow's first time being named to the US National Team roster. Kulow, the Pac-12 Men's Freshman of the Year, placed fifth in the A-finals in the 50m free with a time of 21.87 at the U.S. Swimming National Championships in June. This time is tied for third in the 17-18 LCM boys 50 free all-time rankings. In his first year with the Sun Devils, Kulow took second in the 200 medley relay, third in both the 400 medley relay and 400 free relay, fifth in the 200 free relay and 11th in the 100 free.
Lindsay Looney- 200m butterfly
This year marks Looney's third year on the U.S. National Team. Looney competed in the 200m fly at Worlds in Fukuoka where she swam a 2:07.70. Looney became a Pac-12 champion for the first time in her career last season, winning the 500 free and 200 fly. At NCAA's, she earned Second-Team All-American honors by taking 13th in the 500 free. Looney also placed a career-high fourth in the 200 fly with a school record time of 1:52.25.
Daniel Matheson- 800/1500m freestyle
Matheson is making his debut on the U.S. National Team this year. In his sophomore year, he took 14th in the 1650 free at the NCAA Championships and also raced in the 400 IM and 500 free. At Pac-12s, Matheson placed second in the 1650 free and sixth in the 500 free. He additionally took seventh in the 400m IM.

Hali Flickinger- 200m butterfly
Flickinger, who swam her collegiate career at Georgia, took the bronze in the 200m butterfly and the 400m IM at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. At the 2022 World Aquatics Championships, Flickinger was a part of the 4x200m freestyle relay that won a gold medal along with her silver medal in the 200 fly. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Flickinger swam a 2:07.71.
Ryan Held- 50/100m freestyle
Held swam a personal best of 21.50 in the 50m free and a 23.41 in the 50m fly at the 2023 U.S. Swimming National Championships in Indianapolis. At Worlds in 2022, Held was a part of the 4x100 freestyle relay that won a gold medal along with a silver medal in the 4x100 medley relay and a bronze medal in the 4x100m mixed free relay. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, Held was a part of the squad that won the gold medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay.
Chase Kalisz- 200/400m IM
Kalisz competed in the 400m IM at World Championships in July and was second in that event at US Swimming National Championships the month prior. In the 2020 Summer Olympics, Kalisz took home the gold medal in the 400 IM and won the bronze medal at Worlds in 2022. Kalisz is a two-time gold medalist at World Championships after winning the 200 IM and 400IM in 2017.
Drew Kibler- 200m freestyle
Kibler competed in Fukuoka in the 4x200m free relay which won the silver medal for Team USA. In 2022, Kibler was a part of the 4x200m freestyle relay that won the gold medal and was a part of the squad that won bronze in the 4×100 m mixed freestyle relay. In his time at Texas for his collegiate years, Kibler was second in the 100 yard free and 200 yard free at the 2021 NCAA Championships while being a part of the group that was second 4x200 yard freestyle.
Jay Litherland- 400m IM
Litherland swam a 4:10.74 in the 400 IM this summer in Indianapolis after getting the silver medal in Tokyo in the 2020 Summer Olympics. Litherland additionally is a silver medalist in the 400 IM at the 2019 World Championships.
Regan Smith- 100/200m backstroke, 100/200m butterfly and 200 IM
Smith won four individual medals at the 2023 World Aquatic Championships in Fukuoka. She was a part of the 4x100 medley relay that won the gold as well as taking silver in 50m, 100m and 200m back in addition to a bronze medal in the 200m butterfly. Smith also won three medals at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Olivia Smoliga- 50/100m freestyle, 100m backstroke
Smoliga is a two-time Olympian and won a record eight gold medals at the 2018 World Aquatics Championships. At the US Swimming National Championships, Smoliga swam a fourth place finish in the 100m free with a time of 53.28 to qualify for the 4x100 freestyle relay at Worlds.
