TEMPE– The No. 1/21 Sun Devils are back in action this weekend against a pair of conference opponents, as they will host No. 23 UCLA (Friday, November 3, 2:00 p.m., Women's team only) and No. 16/7 USC (Saturday, November 4, 11:00 a.m.).
FRIDAY VS. UCLA
The No. 21 Sun Devil women will host the No. 23 Bruins in a ranked matchup on Friday afternoon at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
UCLA has a 3-0 record after early season wins at conference foe Washington State, UC Santa Barbara and Illinois. The Bruins also were first at the Fresno State Invitational that took place from Oct. 6-7.
In the meet with Illinois last Friday, UCLA earned 12 wins in the 13 events they swam against the Illini.
At Pac-12 Championships last season, the Bruins were fourth and broke four school records and had seven student-athletes on the podiums. Sophomore Eden Chang was named the Pac-12 Freshman Diver of the Year and five returning members of the team earned All-America honors (Chang, sophomore Katrina Bellio, junior Gizem Guvenc, junior Paige McEachern and graduate Brooke Schaffer).
SATURDAY VS. USC
It will be a ranked matchup for both squads on Saturday morning as the Trojan men are ranked No. 16 and the Trojan women are No. 7.
This will be the second dual meet for both USC programs after competing at Arizona on Friday. The Men of Troy took first at their USC Invitational and third at the SMU Classic Invitational where the women took first at both of those invitationals.
The Trojans men's diving program swept Pac-12 postseason awards as head diving coach Hongping Li was named Men's Diving Coach of the Year, junior Shangfei Wang was named Men's Diver of the Year and sophomore Laurent Gosselin-Paradis was Men's Freshman Diver of the Year. At Pac-12s, the Trojan women were second while the men took fourth.
SUN DEVIL NOTABLES
The Sun Devils were last action in a pair of meets with No. 4/4 NC State as they swam a traditional meet with the Wolfpack on Oct. 20 and an exhibition meet swimming LCM events on Oct. 21.
In the first meet with NC State, Deniz Ertan swam a 9:36.66 in the 1000 free, which is the fourth fastest time in program history. Ertan has won three events so far this season as she's now won the 1000 free twice and also has a win in the 500 free.
Three Sun Devils won all four events they events they competed against the Wolfpack in the Oct. 20 meet: Jack Dolan (200 medley relay, 50 free, 100 free and 400 free relay), Léon Marchand (200 medley relay, 100 breast, 500 free and 400 free relay) and Ilya Kharun (200 medley relay, 200 fly, 100 fly and 400 free relay). Marchand took first in the 100m fly and 200m free in the exhibition meet on Oct. 21 and Kharun was first in the 200m fly.
Other Sun Devils who won multiple events in the dual meet on Oct. 20 include Hubert Kós (200 back and 200 IM), Molly Batchelor (500 free and 400 free relay), Ieva Maluka (200 free, 400 free relay), Lindsay Looney (200 fly, 400 free relay).
In the exhibition meet the next day, Andy Dobrzanski took first in both the 100m and 200m breast.
Outside of Tempe, Jonny Kulow won six medals for Team USA (gold in the 400m mixed medley and 400m medley relay and silver medals in the 100m free, 4x100 free relay, mixed 4x100m free relay and 50 free) at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.
Jade Foelske also competed at the Pan American Gaemes as well as she swam the 100m fly, 200m fly and 200m IM representing Ecuador.
