Sun Devil Swimming and Pros Take on WorldsSun Devil Swimming and Pros Take on Worlds

TEMPE– 10 members (six student-athletes and four pros) representing Sun Devil Swimming in addition to two alumni have qualified for the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan with competition beginning Saturday.

Here is a look at all those who qualified to compete at Worlds who will represent seven different countries in Fukuoka. Information will be updated as needed leading up to competition.


Student-Athletes
Jarod Arroyo (Puerto Rico)
Arroyo will swim the 200m IM and 400 IM at Worlds after winning the 200 IM at the Puerto Rico International Swimming Open in April and qualifying for the 400m IM at the TYR Pro Series in Mission Viejo, Calif. 

Dylan Gravley (USA)
Gravley, along with his brother Brennan Gravley, rounded out the top three at the U.S. Open Water National Championships in Sarasota, Fla. to qualify for the men's 10k. This will be the first event of the championships with a Sun Devil in action as Gravley will compete on Saturday, July 15 at 4 p.m. MST. 

Gravley competed in the men's 10k last year at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary placing 13th.

Ilya Kharun (Canada)
Kharun is an incoming freshman for Arizona State who is competing for Canada. He qualified for the 200m fly and will also compete in the 50 fly. 

Kharun competed for Canada last year's World Short Course championships where he medaled in two events and set two World Junior records and three Canadian records. 

Hubert Kos (Hungary)
Kos, an incoming sophomore, qualified for Worlds in the 200m backstroke. 

In his first season as a Sun Devil, Kos set a school record in the same event at NCAAs where he placed third. He also added top-11 finishes in the 400 IM and 200 IM.

Lindsay Looney (USA)
Looney will compete in the 200m butterfly after finishing second in the Phillips 66 National Championships event on June 27.

In her redshirt junior season, Looney set a school record in the same event with a time of 1:52.25 at NCAAs where she finished fourth. She also earned Second-Team All-American honors by taking 13th in the 500 free.

Léon Marchand (France)
Marchand qualified for the 200m breaststroke after winning the event with a time of 2:06.59 at the 2023 French Elite Swimming Championships in Rennes. He also won the 200m free, 200m butterfly and 200 IM in days two through four. On the final day of competition, Marchand qualified for Worlds in the 400 IM.

After a record setting sophomore season, Marchand was named the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year and the CSCAA Division I Men's Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Pros and Alumni
Ryan Held (USA)
Held, a 2016 Olympic gold medalist in the 4x100 relay, qualified for the 2023 World Aquatic Championships in the 50m free after winning gold at the US Swimming National Championships in Indianapolis. 

At Worlds last year in Budapest, Held was a a part of the 4x100 freestyle relay that won the gold and was second in the 4x100 medley relay.

Max McCusker (Ireland)
McCusker, a recent alum after competing for the Sun Devils in 2022-23, will compete in the 100m fly on July 28.

McCusker competed his final collegiate season with ASU where he was a part of being second in the 200 medley relay, third in the 400 medley relay and fifth in the 200 free relay at NCAAs. He is a Pac-12 champion in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. 

Chase Kalisz (USA)
Kalisz will compete in the 400m IM and was second in that event at US Swimming National Championships last month. 

In the 2020 Summer Olympics, Kalisz took home the gold medal in the 400 IM and won the bronze medal at Worlds last year. 

Regan Smith (USA)
As a 2020 Summer Olympics silver and bronze medalist, Smith qualified for Worlds this year in 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and 200m butterfly. She won those three of those four events at the US Swimming National Championships where she broke her own U.S. Open record in 100 back and broke the U.S. Open record in the 200 back. 

Olivia Smoliga (USA)
Smoliga, a two-time Olympian, qualified for Worlds this year in the 4x100 freestyle relay. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Smoliga was a part of the relay that won the gold medal and she earned a bronze medal in the relay in Tokyo.

Carter Swift (New Zealand)
Swift, a Sun Devil alum, qualified for the 4x100 mixed free relay.

In his final season with the Sun Devils in 2021-22, he placed second in the 400 free relay and swam the 50, 100 and 200 free at NCAA Championships. At his last Pac-12s, he was a part of the winning 800 free relay and also raced the 200 & 400 free relays where they placed second, fourth in the 100 free and 12th in the 50 free and 200 free.
