"The guys looked solid today," said Associate Head Coach Thomas Sutton. "They were ready to play from the first hole and did not look back. We are looking to build on this tomorrow."
Arizona State has a six-stroke lead on the No. 2 seed and conference rival Stanford Cardinal. The No. 3 seed Virginia Cavaliers sit one back of the Cardinal at 19-under for third.
The Sun Devils paced the field on the four par-5 holes, shooting 19-under. Both of Summerhays' eagles in the round came on par-5s and every Sun Devil birdied the 507-yard 12th. Of the 20 times a Sun Devil stepped onto the tee of a par-5, there were only three pars and zero bogeys.
Summerhays dazzled, firing two eagles on the front-nine and a bogey-free back-nine. He birdied the first three holes of the back-nine and the last two. Summerhays totaled seven birdies and just one bogey in the round. SUN DEVIL LOWEST ROUNDS (62 OR LOWER) 60/-10, Paul Casey, 1999 Pac-10 Championship (fourth round) 61/-9, Jon Rahm, 2013 NCAA Championship (first round) 62/-10, Preston Summerhays, 2023 NCAA Las Vegas Regional (First round) 62/-10, Jeff Quinney, 1999 ASU Thunderbird Invitational (third round) 62/-9, Jon Rahm, 2014 ASU Thunderbird Invitational (first round)
"Preston is a superstar and day one of Regionals is the ideal time for the superstars to carry the team," said Head Coach Matt Thurmond. "That round was ridiculous; ten under with a bogey! I'm glad he's on our team!"6??2??

Preston ??? with a ??? on 18 to finish the round at 10-under 62 and in sole possession of the individual lead. It's our first 62 of the season.

The 10-under card is just the third of its kind for Arizona State in the Golfstat era. Of the other two, only Paul Casey's 10-under 60 in the 1999 Pac-10 Championship came in postseason play.
For being two strokes back of the team leader, Josele Ballester's 8-under 64 was far from quiet. His card was bogey-free and included a 5-under mark on par 4 holes, tied second best in the field. Ballester will start Tuesday's second round in a tie for third.Sources can confirm… that'll play??

Preston Summerhays ??? is now just the fifth Sun Devil to fire a 62 or better in the Golfstat era. All four of our scorers went under 70 in the opening round.

"Josele is getting better every day right now," said Thurmond. "He's hitting it long and pure, making good strategy decisions, and putting well. It was an awesome bogey-free round today. I want to see him back it up with a great round again tomorrow."
Michael Mjaaseth ended day one not far behind his teammates, sitting tied for 14th at 5-under 67. He was even through the front-nine with two birdies and two bogeys before catching fire, rattling off a birdie and four birdies to just one bogey on the back-nine. Luke Potter had a similar round. He was even through the front-nine after two birdies and a double bogey on nine, but went 3-under with three birdies on the back.Back-to-back ??????
