PHOENIX -  Host Sun Devil Women's Golf opened play at the 2023 Pac-12 Championship at Papago Golf Club on Monday with a 2-over 290, led by two-time All-American Ashley Menne's 2-under 70 that has her tied for fifth. USC leads the team competition with a 9-under 279, as ASU sits in sixth.

ROUND BREAKDOWN
Freshman Paula Schulz-Hanssen had an eagle and a birdie in her first three holes to set the pace, while Menne was 2-under through three holes. The Sun Devils were 1-under through nine, with Menne (-2) and Amanda Linner (-1) leading the way. Linner posted back-to-back birdies at No. 7 and then No. 8 and was 1-under before through 16. Menne peaked at 3-under through 11, finsihing two-under thanks to a chip-in for birdie on the par-3 17th (214 yards).

QUOTABLES
Coach Farr-Kaye on her team's performance
"It was kind of a hard day to figure out. We didn't play bad, there were just some breaks that didn't go our way. A couple of close calls on puts and those will start to fall. It's a three-day championship and I know what this team is capable of."

Coach Farr-Kaye on the experience for her young team
"I expect them to settle down now that they've played a round. It is hard for these freshman to know what to expect. Now that they've had a taste, I expect them to compete even harder and have fun out there tomorrow."

Ashley Menne on her chip in for birdie on 17
"I regrouped after my tee shot and picked a spot near the hole and get as close as I can and it just went in. That was a boost at the end of the day."

Ashley Menne on the team's mindset heading into tomorrow
"On the first day of the tournament, it takes us some time to get back into tournament mode again. We are determined to come out strong tomorrow and maintain our focus throughout the round."

NOTABLES
  • Paula Schulz-Hanssen's eagle on two was one of only three on the day and the lone one to take place on the second hole.
  • Nobody finished with a better scoring average on par three holes than Ashley Menne, as she paced the field at a 2.5 clip.
    • Menne also had a team-high four birdies, including two back-to-back on a bogey-free front nine.
    • Menne was the only golfer in the field to record birdies on two par-three holes.
  • Arizona State finished two-under on par five holes, boasting a 4.90 scoring average, which was tied for the third-lowest figure in the field.
  •  Amanda Linner found a groove in the middle of the round, going two-under during a 13-hole stretch that started on four.
  • Beth Coulter enjoyed a similar run before and after the turn, putting together a two-under stretch over 11 holes beginning on seven.

HOSTING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Arizona State is hosting the Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship for the first time since 2011. The school is no stranger to hosting major golf events, as they prepare to hold the NCAA Men's and Women's Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale for the third consecutive year. The event is free and open to the public.

PAPAGO AS HOST SITE
This is the first time that the Sun Devils host the conference title event at Papago Golf Club, a place where head coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team has enjoyed plenty of success at. The Maroon & Gold will get a chance to win their first Pac-12 Championship since 2009 in front of their home fans.

DETAILS ON HOW TO STOP OUT AND WATCH
The event is free and open to the public. The Phoenix Municipal Stadium parking lot South of the golf course will be utilized as spectator parking, which will be offered for free as well. Signage will direct you to an entrance by the 13th hole where golf cart shuttles will be available throughout the day to take you to the clubhouse.

THE FORMAT
Play shall be conducted with twosomes and threesomes. Team pairings for the first day of the championship were determined by a blind draw, with the number one seed guaranteed to play in a twosome off the first tee with a tee time in the middle of the draw. All team seeding were based on an average of the Golfweek Sagarin ratings and Golfstatnational women's golf rankings in addition to head-to-head standings of NCAA Division I women's teams.

THE COURSE
Originally built in 1963, Papago Golf Club was one of the original Valley golf courses and has been an asset to the Phoenix public-golf community. Designed by well-known and esteemed golf course architect William Francis (Billy) Bell. The course provides spectacular views of Phoenix from its unique, strategic setting at the base of Papago Buttes. Despite its convenient central location, golfers experience a setting rich with the native elements that make Arizona a unique state.

The home of Sun Devil Men's and Women's Golf was named the Arizona Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) of Arizona in 2021. The annual host venue of both the ASU/PING Invitational and Thunderbird Collegiate has long been considered one of the top courses in the state, but now has earned the official title after being crowned by the NGCOA last year. It also serves as the annual host of the PING/ASU Invitational.

HISTORY AT PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP
No team has enjoyed more success at the Pac-10/12 Women's Golf Championships than Arizona State. Their 13 individual champions are six more than any other team, while their eight team championships are tied for first. Most recently, Olivia Mehaffey claimed the 2019 Individual Championship by coming back from four strokes down on the final day. The Sun Devils last one as a team back in 2009 on their way to the program's seventh of eight NCAA Championships, with Coach Farr-Kaye serving as an Assistant Coach that year.

Legendary Sun Devil Women's Golf Head Coach Linda Vollstedt could be considered the queen of the Pac-10/12 Championships. Her teams won it a total of six times, including the first two in 1987 & 1988. Later in her career, Arizona State ran off four straight titles during their dominant run in the mid-90s, a feat that has never been matched since. ASU has three Top-3 finishes at the conference championships under Coach Farr-Kaye, finishing third in 2016, 2019, and 2021.

TERRITORIAL CUP POINT
The highest finisher between Arizona State and Arizona at this event will be awarded a critical Territorial Cup Series point.
