PHOENIX, Ariz. – Papago Golf Club, the home of Sun Devil Men's and Women's Golf, was recently named the Arizona Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) of Arizona.
The annual host venue of both the ASU/PING Invitational and Thunderbird Collegiate has long been considered one of the top courses in the state, but now has earned the official title after being crowned by the NGCOA.
"We are incredibly honored by the NCGOA Arizona award," Papago Golf Club General Manager Daryl Crawford told Troon Magazine. "Papago's storied history and longtime love affair with locals are well documented. We are so pleased to share our new and approved amenities with our guests."
The iconic course has hosted numerous historic events, dating back to the US Amateur Public Links Championship in 1971. It is also home to the nationally-renowned Thunderbirds Golf Complex, the state-of-the-art practice facility for both Sun Devil Golf programs that set a new standard in collegiate golf.
"Congratulations to the entire staff at Papago for earning Arizona Golf Course of the Year," Sun Devil Women's Golf Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye remarked. "We are so fortunate to get to call Papago our home. This is a special place and we love getting to come here every day!"
MORE ABOUT PAPAGO
Originally built in 1963, Papago Golf Course was one of the original Valley golf courses and has been an asset to the Phoenix public-golf community. Designed by well-known and esteemed golf course architect William Francis (Billy) Bell. The course provides spectacular views of Phoenix from its unique, strategic setting at the base of Papago Buttes. Despite its convenient central location, golfers experience a setting rich with the native elements that make Arizona a unique state.
"COOLEST" PRACTICE FACILITY IN COLLEGE GOLF
On Nov. 1, 2018, Papago Golf Course became the new home for Sun Devil Men's & Women's Golf with the unveiling of their new state-of-the-art practice facility -- The Thunderbirds Golf Complex -- through the generous commitment by The Thunderbirds organization. Arizona State, in partnership with The Thunderbirds, Arizona Golf Community Foundation, the City of Phoenix and Phil Mickelson Design, revitalized the course and helped build the Lou Grubb Clubhouse and Lou's Bar & Grill as part of the transition.
The Thunderbirds Golf Complex, designed by Douglas Fredrickson Architects and built by Rummel Contruction Inc., is a 7,000-square foot facility featuring a grand entry lobby, national championship displays, a team gym and locker rooms for both men's and women's teams, a fueling station, study lounge, team lounge, indoor hitting bays and more.
