TULSA, Oklahoma - The madness is underway in Tulsa, Oklahoma! Sun Devil Wrestling celebrated four wrestlers reaching the quarterfinals after one day of action at the NCAA Championships. 125 Brandon Courtney,  133 Michael McGee, 149 Kyle Parco and HWT Cohlton Schultz are all still in the mix through two rounds of action and looking to reach All-American status Friday morning. Quarterfinal action begins at 11:00 a.m. CT/ 9:00 a.m. AZ on ESPNU.

"We did what we wanted to do this round, which was go out, score points, and get our hands raised," head coach Zeke Jones said. "We wanted to score points fast, attack on our whistles and be proficient in all three positions and I think we've done that. Tomorrow I think we just continue to do what we're doing. Our guys are well-prepared, confident and their conditioning is great so I think they just need to continue to relax, breathe, and wrestle."

Of note
  • In the first round, the Sun Devils led the tournament after 149 with 43 total match points. Cornell and Iowa were tied for second with 31 each.
  • After the morning session:
    • McGee's 20-point match victory was the second-highest scoring match of the tournament. Parco's 18 point-win was tied for fourth.
  • ASU had 57 total match points, ranking 4th
  • ASU picked up bonus points in three of their first five matches, thanks to major decisions from McGee, Parco and Schultz.
  • Maybe the hottest win of the day came in round two where 3-seed Kyle Parco won 6-3 over 14-seeded Austin Gomez (Wisconsin), a 2022 All-American. Gomez led the match 2-1 after a period, but Parco rallied to outscore the Badger 5-1 in the final two periods.
  • Cohlton Schultz topped off the day with a third-period pin over Colton McKiernan (SIU Edwardsville).

Kyle Parco on his win over Austin Gomez and the team's performance today:
"I try not to have a lot going through my head when I wrestle, because when I do matches tend to not go my way. Overall as a team I think we've been really tough. At moments when we could've been defeated we went out there and beat them and that's been the main point all day; we're not trying to get beat. I don't have anything I want to change going into tomorrow, I just want to keep doing what I'm doing and keep my head clear."

Defend, shoot, score! Quick moves from Parco.
