SANTA CLARA – Sun Devil Baseball missed the memo that it had a flight to catch as the team exploded for three touchdowns and its most runs since 2010 with a 21-1 rout over Santa Clara on Monday afternoon to complete its Bay Area road trip.
The Sun Devils racked up 22 hits in the contest and scored crooked numbers in five innings, including 10 runs in the ninth inning – the most in one inning since 2015 and a feat that nearly caused the team to be late for their flight out of San Jose.
The 21 runs were the most since scoring 21 against San Francisco in April 2010 and the 20-run margin of victory was ASU's largest since Feb. 20, 2010 against Northern Illinois. It was the most runs scored in a road game since scoring 23 on Feb. 27, 2007 at Arizona and the most runs in a true road game played outside the state of Arizona since a 22-4 victory at New Mexico on May 18, 2004.
Four different Sun Devils recorded three hits (Joe Lampe, Sean McLain, Nate Baez, Cam Magee) while three others added two (Conor Davis, Ryan Campos and Will Rogers). Rogers got both of his in that explosive ninth inning, recording an RBI triple followed by an RBI triple later in the frame to lead the Sun Devils with three RBIs.
ASU accomplished the feat with seven doubles and a triple, but with no homers as the team bought in to the coaching staff's manta of getting on top and driving through balls and letting the results speak for themselves. ASU also drew 12 walks, two HBP and benefit from two SCU errors in the contest.
The Sun Devil pitching staff had limped into the game after a tough weekend at Stanford but the shorthanded group posted one of the team's best efforts of the year with the first four pitchers combining to shutout Santa Clara through eight innings. TURNING POINT
Quite literally, the turning point in this one was the first pitch of the day. Joe Lampe wasted no time with a leadoff double down the opposite left field line. Conor Davis played him three batters later, followed by an RBI double from Ryan Campos before scoring later in the inning on a wild pitch and ASU took a 3-0 advantage it would never relinquish. BIG MOMENT
While ASU kept the pressure on offensively the entire game, it deserves mention that the Sun Devil pitching staff put together one of its best efforts of the season – matching a season low in holding the opponent to one run. This comes despite it being a designated bullpen day as the depleted pitching staff simply was looking to find a way to get through the game at the outset. The group responded by holding Santa Clara scoreless through eight innings. Boyd Vander Kooi earned the start with 2.1 scoreless but it was Jared Glenn that entered for the second straight game and kept an opposing team off balance as he went 2.2 scoreless with three strikeouts and no walks while allowing ASU to build up an 8-0 lead through four innings. FINAL STRAW
The Sun Devils didn't get the memo that they had a flight to catch, bringing 15 batters to the dish in the ninth inning, scoring 10 runs in a frame for the first time since 2015. Among the highlights: Will Rogers had an RBI triple and a two-RBI double, Bronson Balholm recorded his first Division I RBI and Hunter Haas got his first hit since being sidelined with a rotator cuff tear suffered the second weekend of the year with an RBI double. NOTABLES
First Inning
Joe Lampe doubled on the first pitch he saw and Sean McLain followed by battling back from 0-2 to draw a walk. Ryan Campos followed with a first pitch RBI double and would eventually score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 after half an inning. Boyd Vander Kooi made quick work of the Broncos on just eight pitches.
Second Inning
A leadoff walk from Alex Champagne and single from Lampe chased the Santa Clara starter. McLain laced one through the left side for an RBI single. Lampe showed off the speed and base-running savvy, tagging up at second on a popup in foul territory to first and moving to third, setting the table for Conor Davis' sac fly to make it 5-0. Vander Kooi faced his first jam after a leadoff single and a walk. He got a strikeout, followed by a run-saving sliding snag in left field by Ryan Campos. A two-out walk loaded the bases but Vander Kooi got out of it with a flyout to right.
Third
Nate Baez extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a leadoff double - his team-leading 14th of the season – the chase the SCU pitcher. He would score two batters later on a two-base throwing error on a groundball to make it 6-0. Vander Kooi issued a one-out single and that would end the day for the senior. Jared Glenn came in and got a strikeout and Sean McLain made a heck of a play in the hole with the throw across his body to get the runner at first to keep it a 6-0 game.
Fourth
McLain reached on a leadoff double that got lost in the wind and took third on a balk. After back-to-back strikeouts from ASU's 3-4-hole hitters, Campos laced a first pitch right back up the middle to bring the run across and make it 7-0. Nate Baez followed that up with his 15thdouble of the season to make it 8-0. Jared Glenn worked around a one-out single to strand the runner and keep it 8-0.
Fifth
Joe Lampe drew a two out walk and stole his second bag of the game and he stole second but would be stranded there on a foul fly to the catcher. Glenn added a pair of strikeouts and then got a groundout after a two-out HBP to keep the Broncos scoreless.
Sixth
Davis singled and Campos walked, putting a pair on with one out. The duo moved to scoring position on a Baez groundout and Kai Murphy added his 11th and 12th RBIs in the last eight games on a single through the right side to make it 10-0. Graham Osman issued a pair of strikeouts and stranded a pair to keep SCU off the board.
Seventh
ASU had a bunch of traffic in the frame but only recorded one run on a throwing error, making it 11-0. Graham Osman issued a leadoff single that was wiped away on a fielder's choice. After a one-out walk, he got a double play to Champagne at second to keep it 11-0.
Eighth
ASU loaded the bases with two outs but couldn't do anything with it. Andrew Lucas stranded a two-out infield single.
Ninth
The Sun Devils got a leadoff double from Tobias and the first career triple of Will Rogers career brought him home. ASU would load the bases for Cam Magee, who knocked an RBI single before Alex Champagne and Joe Lampe both walked in runs. Sean McLain added a sac fly and Haas had a RBI single and Will Rogers – in his second AB of the inning – got a two-RBI double. Bronson Balholm got his first career Division I RBI on a groundout to make it 20-0 before wrapping up the scoring with an Ivan Brethowr single. SCU finally got on the scoreboard in the ninth with a one out RBI double but ASU stranded the bases loaded to keep it a 20-run game.
