CATHEDRAL CITY – The Arizona State softball team run-ruled and shutout Auburn, 13-0, to open play in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Thursday afternoon. The win against the Tigers extends ASU's winning streak to six consecutive games.
The first inning saw no offensive production for either dugout as a swinging strikeout from starting pitcher Madison Preston ended the Auburn at-bat with two runners left on base. ASU fielded a ground out and pop-up as Preston forced another batter to strikeout swinging in the top of the second.
ASU landed on the board in statement style in the second with a homerun from Denae Chatman that earned two RBI as Alli Tatnall, who walked earlier in the inning, was also brought home.
Auburn attempted to kick-start their offense with a pinch runner for a walked batter. Again, the ASU defense caged the Tigers, leaving one runner on base. The Sun Devils at-bats stayed cooking through the third with four runs in eight at-bats. ASU's six runs through the third inning came from six different players including: Alli Tatnall, Denae Chatman, Bella Loomis, Maddi Hackbarth, Alynah Torres, and Jazmine Hill.
With the run-rule in sight, ASU solidified the game with an additional seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 13-0. ASU hit through its entire batting order in the fourth with only one runner left on base.
Preston finished the night with only one hit and three walks in 19 batters faced. She threw for three-and-out at the top of the fifth to collect her first shutout and improve to 4-0 record with a 1.22 ERA through 28.2 innings pitched.
