Women's Golf Improves by Nine Strokes on Day Two of Northrop GrummanWomen's Golf Improves by Nine Strokes on Day Two of Northrop Grumman
PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The Sun Devil Women's Golf team showed improvement during the second round at the 25th edition of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, taking place Monday at Palos Verdes Golf Club.

Olivia Mehaffey carded a season-low of 68 (-3), her 18th career round in the 60s, helping her move into a tie for third place. Alessandra Fanali had the second-best total of the day, finishing even (71) and ascending 14 spots up the leaderboard. Another solid round was turned in by Linn Grant, as she sits in the Top-15 heading into the final round.

Arizona State made excellent adjustments to the course and took advantage of better playing conditions. The Maroon & Gold caught fire on several occasions, putting together fantastic stretches of golf on both the front and back nine. Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team shot a 284 (E), cutting their day one score down by nine strokes helping them move into sixth place. In a field featuring eight of the Top-10 teams in the country, the Sun Devils are within striking distance of the top, sitting just three strokes back of third place and five strokes back of second.

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
Four of the five Sun Devils improved upon their score from yesterday, as the team came out ready to make a move. A bogey-free front nine from Olivia Mehaffey set the tone for what would be a strong finish for the senior. She made an incredible run over her final five holes to jump into a tie for third, recording four birdies on her way to posting the fifth-best round of the day. A big reason Mehaffey has remained in the Top-Five at the end of both days is her play on par four opportunities, as she boasts the second-best average score of the tournament.

Alessandra Fanali (E/71) moved 15 spots up the leaderboard after cutting five strokes off of her score from day one to day two. Fanali built some momentum with a birdie on her first hole, leading to her appearance at the 16th hole. Fanali recorded one of only five eagles at the tournament, carding a three on the par five opportunity. Like Mehaffey, Fanali also finished strong, recording birdies on each of her final two holes.

Raquel Olmos joined Fanali in ascending the leaderboard, moving up 10 spots today after improving her score by nine strokes. Olmos caught fire in the middle of her front nine, as she birdied three consecutive holes (14-16). She ended her round on a positive note, finishing with a birdie on nine.

Linn Grant (+1/72) remains in strong contention for a spot in the Top-10, sitting in a tie for 15th after day two. During an incredible stretch on her front nine, Grant found a rhythm, birdieing four of six holes. She built some momentum heading into the final round, finishing two-under over her final five holes.

Amanda Linner was the fourth Sun Devil to lower their score from yesterday. She recorded three birdies during an even front nine, including two consecutive birdies on 16 & 17.

TEAM RESULTS
Arizona State remains in contention for a Top-Five finish as a team despite compete in arguably the toughest field to this point in Women's Collegiate Golf. A main factor for that has been the team's ability to make birdies. The Sun Devils have recorded 35 birdies, tied for the most of any team in the field. During a front nine stretch running from the 13th-16th holes, the team caught fire, carding 10 birdies.

The Maroon & Gold have also found success on par four and par five opportunities. ASU boasts the second-best par five scoring average of any team, currently sitting at six-under for the tournament on such chances. The team also features the third-best scoring average on par four holes through two rounds.

Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye and Assistant Coach Michelle Estill have provided their players with the correct strategy on how to approach the 16th hole. After going three-under on the par-five opportunity yesterday, ASU managed to improve that total today. All five Sun Devils went under-par on the hole, including four birdies and one eagle. Arizona State is now nine-under on the 16th hole at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge.
