TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Women's Golf senior Olivia Mehaffey has been awarded the opportunity to play in the LPGA Tour's ANA Inspiration event at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Mehaffey is one of only five amateurs selected to compete in the first LPGA major of the Tour season. She is joined by Kaitlyn Papp (Texas), Gabriela Ruffels (USC), Angelina Ye (Stanford), as current collegiate golfers to receive a sponsor exemption in order to play in the prestigious tournament. The 72-hole ANA Inspiration runs April 2-5 with daily coverage provided by Golf Channel. The event dates back to 1972, officially becoming a Major in 1983.
Entering the final stages of her Sun Devil career, Mehaffey continues to add to what is already an impressive resumé. Not only has she enjoyed success while representing the Maroon & Gold, the three-time All-American has gained experience in international and professional competition. This past summer, Mehaffey represented Great Britain & Ireland in the battle for the 2019 Astor Trophy. Last April, she participated in the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur, advancing to play at the iconic Augusta National Golf Course. She is hard at work attempting to achieve her ultimate goal of turning professional and reaching the LPGA Tour.
The No. 2 Sun Devil Women's Golf team is in action tomorrow, as they compete in the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, California. Olivia Mehaffey returns to the site where she captured the 2019 Pac-12 Individual Championship, with Arizona State finished third as a team. After trailing by four strokes entering the final round, Mehaffey fired a 70 (-1) to force a playoff. She went on to defeat top-ranked Albane Valenzuela of Stanford to earn the Pac-12 Women's Golf Individual Championship. Mehaffey was the only player in the 55-team field to shoot under par in all three rounds.
