ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A handful of Sun Devils rearranged the school record books Saturday when Arizona State's track and field teams competed at the New Mexico Team Invitational.
Overall, six Sun Devil competitors added themselves to, or moved up on, a top-10 list with their performances at the ABQ Convention Center Saturday. Two Devils, Cole Riddle and NCAA champion Samantha Noennig saw themselves put up top-three marks in their respective events.
Riddle was one of the final athletes in the men's pole vault competition, and would need to clear 5.45m/17-10.50 meters to continue to jump. It was the third-straight outing in which Riddle reached the 5.45 height, but the redshirt-sophomore cleared the bar on his second attempt this time, and managed to leave New Mexico with his first win since he won the same contest back in 2019.
The clearance moved him to third in program history and within a foot of Olympic gold-medalist Nick Hysong's school record that has stood for 26 years.
While Riddle moved to third in history, on the women's side, Sevanna Hanson put her name at the eight spot when she got over 4.00m/13-1.50 feet along with her teammate Tommi Hintnaus.
Noennig briefly gave up the national shot put lead, but took it back Saturday in a commanding effort.
The defending indoor and outdoor shot put champion became the first collegiate woman in 2020 to break 18 meters in the shot put when she won the event Saturday. She took the national lead with her personal best 18.17m/59-7.50 throw.
It marked the second time the Sun Devil junior had broken 18 meters, and the first time indoors.
On the track, Josephine Anokye's 23.61 in the 200 put her at fourth in school history and up to 11th in the NCAA. It's the fastest time by a Sun Devil since Jasmine Chaney's 23.16 in 2011.
True freshman Christina Warren jumped 12.46m/40-10.50 feet to win and claim the sixth-best triple jump mark in school history, and Shelby Moran improved on her personal best to set the ninth-best weight throw mark.
The Devils will head back to Tempe, but return to New Mexico in a week's time to compete in the second of three meets on the schedule at the ABQ Convention Center.
