TEMPE, Ariz. – With four of the matches going to three sets, Gold beat Maroon 3-2 in No. 20 Arizona State beach volleyball's Maroon and Gold Scrimmage on Friday at the PERA Club.
"I thought we were pretty aggressive for the most part," Arizona State head coach Brad Keenan said. "That was a good sign that they get fired up for games. I thought our serving could be better today, as well as our setting. We have things to work on, but overall, I was happy with today. We have a pretty even group all the way down the lineup, so on any given day it's going to be a pretty exciting match."
Kate Baldwin and Lexi Sweeney clinched the win for Gold on their court, winning their match in three sets. The other two points came from Sierra Ellett and Maria Kowal as well as Katelyn Carballo and Samantha Plaster, both of those matches going to three sets as well.
For Maroon, their wins came from Cierra Flood and Lauren Weintraub's two-set win, the only two-set match of the day, and Matea Suan and Sarah Waters' three-set win.
The scrimmage was a great opportunity for the Sand Devils to get experience with officials on the courts as well as a crowd watching. Every pair that competed today was a new pair that had not played together in an official match. All but two players on the roster played today, with Flood and Weintraub playing two matches for Maroon.
The 2020 season will begin on February 22 in Tucson. ASU will play neutral site matches against San Francisco and Boise State, both live on the Pac-12 Network.
