LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No, 8 Arizona State women's water polo team (9-2, 0-1 MPSF) went 1-1 on Sunday and got their second upset win of the weekend to finish third at the Triton Invitational. The Sun Devils dropped a close game to No. 3 UCLA in the semifinal before upsetting No. 7 UCSD to finish up the weekend.
The Sun Devils have next week off before heading back to California for the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at UC Irvine Friday-Sunday, Feb. 21-23.
Game 1: No. 3 UCLA 11, No. 8 Arizona State 8
The Sun Devils got off to a strong start early as three differrent players scored in the first period and ASU entered the second quarter with a 3-2 lead. The offense went stagnant for the middle of the game, scoring two goals to UCLA's eight in the second and third quarters combined. The Sun Devils held the Bruins to their second-lowest score of the season but couldn't quite pull off the upset as they fought their way back from a 5-10 deficit entering the fourth quarter.
Borbala Kekesi, Meghan Beaudet and Alison Cameron each contributed two goals for the Sun Devils as the team displayed a balanced offensive attack in the game.
