FLAGSTAFF – Turner Washington set the tone by winning the first event of the day, and the rest of the Sun Devils followed his lead in Arizona State's indoor season-opener.
The redshirt sophomore Washington made his Sun Devil debut a memorable one when he won the men's shot put contest with a throw of 20.43m/67-0.50 feet.
"When you look at things through a national lens, Turner was obviously the star for us tonight," coach Dion Miller said. "He went out and set a big PR and really was the spark for the rest of the meet."
His heave was 10 feet better than this closest competitor and put him at the top of the NCAA in 2020. Washington now sits at third in program history in the indoor shot put, only behind NCAA record-holder and Olympian Ryan Whiting and former NCAA champion Jordan Clarke.
Washington's win was the first of what would be six event victories in Flagstaff. On the women's side, Kaylee Antill led the Sun Devils' one-two sweep in the women's weight throw, while freshman Shelby Moran took second place in her ASU debut. Moran's throw of 19.34m/63-5.50 placed her into the top-10 in school history in the event.
On the track, Kentre Patterson won the men's 60-meter hurdles in 7.80 and moved to third in Sun Devil history. Fearghal Curtin and Bianca Tinoco gave the Devils two more wins when they won the men's and women's 800-meter runs, and Jackson Lewis took the mile crown in the Walkup Skydome.
Josephine Anokye started her senior season by putting herself into another top-10 list. She clocked a 7.38 in the 60-meter dash that put her at third in Sun Devil history.
"Josephine's race is going to pay dividends for her in the long run," Miller said. "She's really a 200 runner, but to run 7.38 to open the season after opening around 7.60 last year, that was a big run for her."
Despite missing the entire 2019 outdoor season, Cole Riddle found himself in a familiar spot as one of the final few pole vaulters remaining in Friday night's competition. Coming into Friday, Riddle had 12 top-four finishes in 16 outings as a Sun Devil. He moved to 13-of-17 when he took third in his first action in nearly a year with a clearance of 5.30m/17-4.50 feet.
Antonio Mitchell's debut saw him take second in the 60-meter dash, and Daan Haven, Ian Schulz, NCAA champion Samantha Noennig and freshmen Ethan Wright, Caitlin Rose and Arius Williams all earned runner-up finishes in their respective events.
Junior Tommi Hintnaus, Emily Gallegos-Francksen, and newcomers Erika Lewis, Reina Ferra, Jesper Wolski and Christina Warren all earned third-place finishes.
"As far as today goes, it was good for us to compete and kind of break up the monotony of training," Miller said. "We hadn't seen the kids for a while and this was our first week back, so I think we did well under the circumstances. We competed well out there, but it's just a start."
The Sun Devils will return to Flagstaff in a week for the Lumberjack Team Invitational on Jan. 17.
