PHOENIX – With all postseason awards tabulated and in the books, Sun Devil Baseball's Hunter Bishop and Spencer Torkelson have both been named unanimous All-Americans after being recognized by every single major Division I Baseball media and coaching outlet.
The duo became the first pair of Sun Devil Baseball unanimous All-Americans since Mike Leake and Jason Kipnis in 2009. The two selection also mark the first time that two Sun Devils earned multiple All-America honors in consecutive seasons (Torkelson and Gage Canning last season) since 2009-10.
Bishop was nearly a unanimous first team selection, earning First Team honors from five of six outlets including: D1Baseball, Baseball America, National Collegiate Baseball Writers of American, Perfect Game and the American Baseball Coaches Association. Spencer Torkelson was a second team selection by all of outlets above in addition to Collegiate Baseball News, which also ranked Bishop a second team selection.
Bishop and Torkelson were both named First Team All-West Region selections by the ABCA, with sophomore outfielder Trevor Hauver earning a second team nod from the coaches in the region.
Bishop also got the job done academically as he was named a Google Cloud Academic All-American, presented by CoSIDA for his efforts in the classroom. With a 3.41 GPA in interdisciplinary studies, Bishop became the first CoSIDA Academic All-American for baseball since Ryan Burr in 2015.
Bishop was selected with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants on Monday, becoming the first Sun Devil Baseball player to go in the first round since 2012. He became the 50th first round draft pick in ASU history and the 438th overall selection in the MLB Draft while becoming the the 13th Top-10 pick in Sun Devil lore.
He was the highest draft selection in a decade and the first Top-10 Draft pick since Mike Leake went eighth overall to the Cincinnati Reds in 2009 and was the first Sun Devil to go on the opening day of the draft since Deven Merrero was selected 24thoverall by the Boston Red Sox in 2012.
The junior slugger burst on to the scene in 2019, climbing over 100 positions in nearly every draft projection to earn his selection by the Giants. Bishop knocked 22 home runs on the season the second-best total in the Pac-12 behind teammate Spencer Torkelson and 10th in the country. He had just 10 combined home runs in his first two seasons in Phoenix.
At the conclusion of his season, he was eighth in the country and second in the Pac-12 with a .748 slugging percentage while fifth in the league with a .479 on-base percentage for a gaudy 1.227 OPS. He was seventh nationally and second in the Pac-12 with 166 total bases and finished third in the league 63 RBIs, which was 40th nationally.
He was fourth in the Pac-12 with 67 runs scored, a total that also ranked in the top-25 nationally.
Torkelson was a consensus All-American selection in 2018 as a freshman, making him the first Sun Devil Baseball two-time All-American since Mike Leake and Jason Kipnis in 2008-09.
Torkelson was the Pac-12 home run leader for the second season in a row, finishing the season with 23 – good for fifth in the nation. He became the first Pac-12 player to lead the conference in homers in back-to-back seasons since Oregon State's Michael Conforto 2012 and 2013, though it should be noted Conforto only hit 13 and 11 in those seasons. Torkelson is only the third player in Pac-12 history to have back-to-back 20+ home run seasons.
Torkelson has 48 homers in his career, needing just nine to surpass Bob Horner's long-standing school record of 56.
Torkelson ranked in the Top-10 in the Pac-12 in a slew of categories including homers (1st), walks (41/8th), average (.351/8th), hits (85/3rd/33rdnationally), runs (69/3rd/18thnationally), RBIs (66/2nd/27thnationally), slugging (.707/3rd/17thnationally) and total bases (171/1st/5thnationally).
