FLAGSTAFF – In the final regular season indoor meet of his Sun Devil career, Arizona State senior Matthew Eckles soared to a new personal best in the pole vault Friday at the NAU Tune-Up in Flagstaff.
Eckles finished fourth in the men's pole vault inside the Walkup Skydome Friday, but he was the top-collegiate finisher with his historic clearance of 5.35m/17-6.50 feet. With the mark, he held onto second in the MPSF heading into the conference championships, and improved on the fourth-best mark in school history.
The former Pac-12 champion from 2017 is now 20th on the NCAA's descending order list. Only 16 men will advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Alabama, early next month, and Eckles is just a half-foot shy of the final qualifying place with one more weekend of competition on the schedule.
True freshman Sydnee Larkin won the triple jump competition Friday afternoon with a leap of 12.16m/39-10.75 feet. She hit the personal best mark on her first attempt in Flagstaff and crept closer to fifth in school history in the event.
Larkin opened her day with a third-place finish in the long jump, and fellow newcomer Lauren Tobias finished in fourth in the same event.
Ivan Hinson scored a runner-up finish in the triple jump, and Derrick Monroe and Erika Voyzey both took third place in the long jump and high jump, respectively.
With the completion of the NAU Tune-Up, the Sun Devils wrap up the regular season and get ready for a conference clash in Seattle. The 2019 MPSF Championships will take place at the Dempsey Indoor Facility, Feb. 22-23.
