ATLANTA – For an unprecedented third time, Arizona State head football coach Herm Edwards has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week, officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl announced on Monday.
The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
Edwards once again led ASU to a win over a ranked opponent, as the Sun Devils topped sixth-ranked Oregon 31-28 at home on Saturday. ASU's 535 total yards of offense were the most gained against the Ducks since the 2016 Alamo Bowl. Defensively, ASU forced two turnovers without giving the ball up against an Oregon squad that entered the game second nationally in turnover margin (+1.30) and tied for 12th nationally with 20 turnovers forced compared to only seven lost.
"The way that coach Edwards inspires his players to play their hearts out against top competition is remarkable," said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. "To be named Coach of the Week three times in a season puts him in a class all to himself. He is one of college football's most impactful leaders, and coach Dodd would be proud to see him recognized so frequently with an award that bears his name."
Added Gary Stokan, CEO and president of Peach Bowl, Inc., "We're honored to be able to award one of the nation's best once again. We have never given the award to someone three times in a season, but Edwards has definitely earned this distinction. The impact that he has had in his time in Tempe is truly exceptional."
Edwards was also recognized with the Bobby Dodd weekly honor following ASUs upsets of No. 18 Michigan State (10-7 on Sept. 24 in East Lansing, Mich.) and No. 15 Cal (24-17 on Sept. 27 in Berkeley, Calif.). The two wins marked just the second time in program history that ASU won two straight road games against ranked opponents in back-to-back opportunities, joining the 1986 campaign (Oct. 4 at #15 UCLA and Oct. 18 at #15 USC). It also represented the third time in school annals that the Sun Devils have won two road games in one season against ranked teams (1986 and 1997).
Arizona State is now 5-4 against ranked teams under Edwards, with three of those wins coming this season.
The Dodd Trophy presented by the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl – along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2019 season. The winner of the 2019 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during bowl week for this year's College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
In addition to Edwards' honor, ASU freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels (408 yards passing, three touchdowns) was recognized for his role in Saturday's win, earning Walter Camp National Player of the Week and Pac-12 Offensive Player/Freshman of the Week kudos.
The Sun Devils will be back in action on Saturday when they host Arizona for the 92nd edition of the Territorial Cup. Kickoff for the regular-season finale is set for 8 pm MST, and will be broadcast on ESPN.
