PULLMAN, Wash. – Arizona State's two front-runners had big days on the course, but ultimately the Sun Devils' cross country season came to a close on muddied terrain and under overcast skies Friday at the NCAA West Regional Championships in Colfax, Washington.
The women's 6K race opened the NCAA Championship season, and Daan Haven's 20:46.4 gave her the highest finish by a Devil at a regional since 2017 by taking 36th in the most competitive region in the nation.
"It was a lot better than two weeks ago," coach Cory Leslie said. "This is a young team and they got a first-hand look at how tough this region really is. As great as some of our individual performances were, there's still some disappointment even though we were able to take away a lot from this experience."
Behind Haven was Megan Reniewicki, Alexis Nichols, Courtney Lewis and Ava Shackell. With Shackell finishing in the Sun Devils' top-five for the fifth time this year, she becomes the first ASU freshman to score in every race in a season since 2015.
"She runs with maturity beyond what you'd expect from a freshman and she never really seems rattled," Leslie said. "Even today, she kind of lost track of the group and was pretty far back early on, but she didn't panic and worked her way into a really good spot."
The men's 10K followed, and just like at the Pac-12 Championships two weeks ago, Jackson Lewis set the pace for the Sun Devils by running with the lead pack for a majority of the race.
The Sun Devil junior and team captain ran nearly 30 seconds faster than he had run in the regional a year ago, and finished 40 places higher than in 2018.
"For Jackson to come in and make that jump in a year, as disappointed as we are, we can look at that individual performance and say, 'we're close,'" Leslie said. "Especially on the men's side when we have two good bodies back and home who we're expecting to run next year."
Freshmen Christopher Stone and Tyler Tanta both joined top-five staple Lee Nasewytewa as scorers for the first time in their short careers. Sophomore Ian Kebenei was the Devils' No. 2 runner, while Stone, Nasewytewa and Tanta rounded out the top-five.
Overall, the Stanford women pulled away from Washington to take the regional crown with 39 points, and the Portland men won the West's 10K title.
ASU's women finished 17th and the men took 27th.
With the conclusion of the cross country season, the distance squads get a little more than a month off before returning to competition with the rest of the Sun Devil track and field team during the indoor season under first year director of track and field Dion Miller.
