MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Sun Devil team captains of Jackson Lewis (36th) and Megan Reniewicki (61st), led the Arizona State charge Friday at the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships in Monmouth, Oregon.
Two true freshmen followed the Sun Devil veterans as Vincent Mauri and Ava Shackell finished one place behind the front-runners, with Mauri finishing two-tenths of a second behind Lewis in the men's race.
Overall, the men's team's 242 points got the Devils ninth overall, while the women's 318 earned them 11th.
"It feels like we kind of came here and got punched in the mouth, but we also have to tip our hat to some of the positive news that came out of today," coach Cory Leslie said. "You look at Vinny and Jackson again leading the charge, they both ran big PRs and exceeded expectations individually.
"On the women's side, we did something we've been working on all year and had a 10-second spread from No. 1 to No. 5, which was the best of the day" Leslie said. "We knew the team battle was going to be tight, and as disappointed as we are, when we look at the end result, I think we're in the ballpark. It's just a matter of getting tougher and making sure we make the right decision when the opportunity comes."
Just as it has been all season, the men's top-five went unchanged again with Ian Kebenei, Adam Klein and Lee Nasewytewa wrapping up the scoring behind Lewis and Mauri.
The women had their fourth different combination in as many outings with Reniewicki running in the top-spot for the second time this season, Shackell running at No. 2, and Daan Haven, Courtney Lewis and Alexis Nichols providing the final points.
Stanford's women and the Colorado men earned both the team and individual crowns with Fiona O'Keefe taking first for the Cardinal and Joe Klecker earning gold for the Buffaloes.
ASU's season continues in two weeks when they head back to the Pacific Northwest to race for a spot in the NCAA Championships at the NCAA West Regional Championships. The meet in Pullman, Washington, will pit the Devils against a majority of the same teams they faced today, as well as handful of additional national powerhouses.
"We'll get back to the staple workouts we've done this year, but the message and the goal remain the same," Leslie said. "For me, the only reason you go to the regional meet is to make the national meet and that will not change. We're going to take a group of men and women with us who are ready to race that way."
