COLLEGE STATION, Texas – True freshman Vincent Mauri and junior Courtney Lewis spearheaded the scoring efforts for the Sun Devil cross country teams Saturday, leading the men's team to a sixth-place finish and the women to fifth in College Station, Texas.
"I think when we sit and look at the results, it's hard to imagine it much more perfect than how it was across the board today," coach Cory Leslie said. "What they did today was tough to do, but I think we had a group that was fully confident and committed to the race plan."
Arizona State's 237 points on the men's side put them in a tie for sixth with Mid-Atlantic region No. 8 Pittsburgh. Mauri's 24:03.5 on the 8K course gave him 11th place overall and was the fastest time by a freshman on the day.
"In our first meeting of the year we both decided that we wanted [Mauri] to be the top true freshman in the conference," Leslie said. "I said earlier in the season that he's as fearless as any freshman in the country, but the way he ran today, I'd take him and this group of young guys over any freshmen in the country."
The Sun Devil top-three went unchanged for the third-straight outing as Ian Kebenei (21st) and Jackson Lewis (22nd) joined Mauri in the top-25. Freshman Lee Nasewytewa finished 81st, making him the Devils' fourth scorer, and Adam Klein rounded up the scoring in 109th place.
Courtney Lewis finished 23rd in 21:08.1, but the rest of her Sun Devil teammates weren't far off as ASU's scoring five all finished within 31 seconds of each other.
Daan Haven and freshman Ava Shackell grabbed 28th and 29th, respectively, and Bianca Tinoco (34th) and Alexis Nichols (44th) wrapped up the 146-point scoring effort.
"We really have nine women who could be up there and score in our top-five," Leslie said. "For a spread to be that tight and a group to be that committed to what they're doing and helping each other out is extremely special."
By taking fifth as a team, the women picked up some important head-to-head victories, including one over South Region No. 2 Texas (RV).
Overall, No. 17 Middle Tennessee won the men's race the West Region's Cal Baptist won the women's 6K.
The race in College Station marked the end of the 2019 regular season for the Sun Devils as they gear up for a postseason that gets going in two weeks at the Pac-12 Championships in Corvallis, Oregon.
