TEMPE – Arizona State Newcomer William Paulson made history when he became the first Sun Devil since 2012 to run a mile in under 4 minutes, Saturday night at the UW Invitational in Seattle.
The race in the Pacific Northwest was not only Paulson's season debut, but also his first time representing ASU since arriving in Tempe last fall. The field was expected to be fast and Paulson was one of the fastest, winning his heat and leaving the Dempsey Indoor Facility with the fastest mile of his collegiate career.
With his time of 3:59.94 Saturday, Paulson joins school record-holder Nick Happe as the only Sun Devils in the past 10 years to achieve a sub-4-minute mile.
Paulson's time also planted him at fourth in ASU history behind Sun Devil great Kyle Alcorn, Brandon Strong and Happe with his 3:58.73. The senior is tied for fifth in the notoriously fast MPSF that will have its conference championships in Seattle in just under a month.
Down in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Sun Devil men's pole vaulters nearly completed a sweep of the top-three as all four of the remaining athletes cleared 5.25m/17-2.75 feet, including Cole Riddle (first), Matthew Eckles (third) and Michael Chadwick (fourth). For Chadwick, the clearance was a personal best that moved him to seventh in school history.
Back in Lubbock, Texas, the second day of the Texas Tech Team Invitational saw Jessica Barreira set another personal best, this time in the long jump when she set a mark of 6.23m/20-5.25 feet and finished third in the competition. Coming into Saturday's competition, Barreira already had the second-best triple jump mark in school history. With her long jump mark from Saturday, she now sits in 10th all-time in that event, making her one of five Sun Devils with top-10 marks in both events.
Elijah Hughes' high jump clearance of 2.08m/6-9.75 put him in sixth place on the day and moved him to eighth in the MPSF.
In Austin Kratz' first collegiate 200-meter dash, the freshman finished 17th in 21.44 seconds. The time put him at ninth in the conference after adjustment.
Courtnee Oglesby set a PR in the 400-meter dash in Seattle with a 57.44 on Dempsey's oversized track.
With less than a month until the MPSF Championships, the Sun Devils have three weekends of competition to go until they return to the Evergreen State to battle for a conference crown.
Up next for the Devils is another split weekend that will see the teams head back to Flagstaff for the Mt. T's Invitational, and over the border back into Albuquerque for the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
