TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State senior center Cohl Cabral (Offensive Line Player of the Week) and redshirt senior defensive end George Lea (Defensive Line Player of the Week) both earned Pac-12 Player of the Week recognition for their performances in ASU's 24-17 upset of then-No. 15 and previously unbeaten Cal on Friday.
Cabral and the Sun Devil offensive line helped ASU run for 191 yards as team, its top rushing performance of the season. ASU junior running back Eno Benjamin rushed for 100 yards and three touchdowns while freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels ran for a career-high 84 yards. The blocking of Cabral and the line also helped ASU move 75 yards and convert a trio of third downs on the fourth-quarter drive that produced the go-ahead touchdown.
Lea had four combined tackles and one sack and was part of defensive effort that helped limit Cal to only 245 yards in total offense (only 11 yards in the fourth quarter), more than 120 yards below its average of 366.5 yards coming into the game. Lea's play helped hold Cal to only 2.8 yards per rush. After Cal drove to the ASU 22 late in the first half, Lea sacked Cal quarterback Devon Modster for a four-yard loss. Two plays later, Cal faced a 3rd-and-long situation (thanks in part to Lea's sack) and Modster had his pass intercepted by ASU sophomore safety Aashari Crosswell in the end zone and the game remained tied at 7-7 at the half.
The Sun Devils have now had six players combine for seven Pac-12 weekly awards this season: Daniels (Freshman of the Week – Sept. 3 & Sept. 16), punter Michael Turk (Special Teams Player of the Week – Sept. 3), placekicker Cristian Zendejas (Special Teams Player of the Week – Sept. 9), Jermayne Lole (Defensive Line Player of the Week – Sept. 16), Cabral (Offensive Line Player of the Week – Sept. 30) and Lea (Defensive Line Player of the Week – Sept. 30).
The Sun Devils (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12), ranked No. 20 in this week's AP Top 25, return to action on Sat., Oct. 12 when they host Washington State (3-2, 0-2). Kickoff at Sun Devil Stadium is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. MST.
