ANOTHER FINALS APPEARANCE: The second-seeded Arizona State University men's golf team -- also ranked second by both Golfweek and Golfstat -- competes at Arkansas in the NCAA Championships held May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club (7,550 yards/par-72) in Fayetteville. Sun Devil third-year head coach Matt Thurmond leads the Sun Devils, who under 2008 National Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee and Pac-12 Coach of the Century Randy Lein won the 1996 team title and won the 1990 title under 2002 ASU Hall of Fame and 2009 NGCA Hall of Fame inductee Steve Loy. It marks the 55th NCAA Championship appearance for the program, which is fourth-best. ASU has now made the NCAA Finals in the 15 of the past 18 seasons and 33 of past 36. ASU will be without a senior in its lineup, but has seven years of NCAA Championships in its starting five including three juniors who have played previous two. MOST NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCES

Coach Thurmond also led UW to match-play quarterfinals in 2009, 2010 and 2012 and to six top-20 finishes prior to match play. He led UW to 12 top-20 NCAA finishes overall in 15 seasons, including third-place in 2005. ASU finished 16th in his first year wearing the maroon and gold and then finished 13th last year.

NO ONE BETTER RECENTLY FOR THIS: This season marks the 16th anniversary of Sun Devil freshman Alejandro Canizares winning the 2003 title in Stillwater, the 26th anniversary of Todd Demsey winning the 1993 title, the 27th anniversary of Phil Mickelson winning the last of his three titles and the 36th anniversary of Jim Carter winning the 1983 title. ASU has had four NCAA medalists on six occasions as Carter (1983), Mickelson (1989, 1990, 1992), Demsey (1993), and Canizares (2003) all have taken home the trophy in the past 36 seasons. No other program can match the Sun Devils' six NCAA champions since 1979, as only Oklahoma State (five), Illinois (two), Stanford (two), and UNLV (two) have had multiple winners in that time.

THE FORMAT: The 2019 NCAA Championships will see the team champion determined via match play for the 11th straight year, as 2009 was the first time the winner wasn't awarded by total strokes since 1965. The top 15 teams after 54 holes of stroke play will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will compete in match play quarterfinals and semifinals on Tuesday May 28. The championship match is set for Wednesday, May 29.

ALL-PAC-12 HONORS: @SunDevilMGolf had people all over the place for All-Pac-12 honors. Matt Thurmond earned Pac-12 Coach of the Year while Cameron Sisk earned Freshman of the Year. Chun An Yu and Mason Andersen earned first-team honors, while Blake Wagoner and Alex del Rey earned notched second-team. Wagoner earned first-team All-Academic honors for the second straight year, while del Rey and Andersen earned honorable mention.

QUIETLY HAVING A GOOD SEASON: Lost in the chatter about six individual winners and three straight team titles is the solid season freshman Cameron Sisk is having, as his stroke average is currently the best by any Sun Devil freshman, with some pretty good golfers on the list dating to 1985. He earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Year

SUN DEVIL FRESHMAN SCORING AVERAGES (1985-2019)

CRAZY STAT: Six Sun Devils have earned or shared medalist honors this season. Jino Sohn and James Leow tied for first at the 37-player 2019 Arizona Intercollegiate individual tournament (Jan. 28-29). Alex del Rey won the 84-player National Invitational March 18-19, while freshman Cameron Sisk earned the Sonoran Showdown 20-player event, with both events taking place in Tucson. Sophomore Mason Andersen won a playoff to claim the 91-player field at San Diego's Lamkin Grips Classic on March 11-12, and then Chun An Yu put his name in the 2019 winner's column April 12-13 at ASU's Thunderbird Collegiate.

DON'T TAKE IT FOR GRANTED: Thirty teams earned the right to go to Arkansas, but it isn't easy in the stressful regional world. Golfstat top-30 teams that won't be going to Arkansas are Texas Tech (15), NC State (24), Alabama (28) and UCLA (29). Golfweek's highest three ranked teams earning the trip are Texas Tech (18), Florida State (25) and UCLA (26).
