TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State gymnastics team celebrated the 2019 season with an awards banquet held at the Karsten Golf Course on Saturday afternoon.

Head coach Jay Santos and associate head coach Jessica Santos presented various awards to the Gym Devils, both for scores and spirit. The team recognized the successful 2019 campaign, which resulted in a second-straight trip to NCAA regionals as well as the first winning record in the regular season (11-10) since 2014.

Sophomore Cairo Leonard-Baker was named the 2019 Most Valuable Player. She competed as an all-around gymnast all year and earned All-American honors on the uneven bars as well as All-Pac-12 nods in both the all-around and on bars. The other performance-based award was the Most Improved Gymnast, presented to Corinne Belkoff. She senior became a key member of the lineup in both vault and floor. She capped off her career with her best scores as a Sun Devil, including three 9.900s on floor.

The Sparky Spirit award was given to Ashley Szafranski for her consistently upbeat attitude both in and out of the gym. Her speeches have provided encouragement to the team throughout the year. The other spirit award, Heart of a Sun Devil, was given to Katelyn Lentz. After the senior had a season-ending injury at UCLA, she continued to be a big part of the team and help her teammates get better.

An award was given to each Sun Devil who was the top scorer in each of the four events.
Floor:
Morgan Wilson earned the vault award after averaging a 9.823 in the regular season. She scored a 9.900 twice and over a 9.850-plus three additional times.

Bars:
All-American Leonard-Baker was the standout on bars all season, averaging a 9.902. She competed at NCAA Nationals in that event as an individual.

Beam:
Justine Callis led the way on beam in 2019, finishing in the top 50 nationally with an average of 9.827. She scored a 9.900 or better twice, including a career-high 9.925 at UCLA.

Floor:
Kaitlyn Szafranski was given the floor award after averaging a 9.808, scoring a 9.800 or better in all but three meets. Her career high was a 9.925.

This was the final team event for the six seniors: Corinne Belkoff, Justine Callis, Anne Kuhm, Katelyn Lentz, Kaitlyn Szafranski and Heather Udowitch.
