TEMPE – Sun Devil Football defensive lineman Renell Wren was selected with the 23rd pick of the fourth and the 125th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday.
Additionally, quarterback Manny Wilkins, offensive linemen Casey Tucker and Quinn Bailey, defensive back Jalen Harvey and defensive lineman Doug Subtyl each accepted free agent offers on an exciting day for the Sun Devil Football program.
Wren is the first Sun Devil defensive lineman to go in the NFL Draft since Will Sutton was selected with the 82nd pick in the third round of the 2014 Draft by the Chicago Bears. Wren becomes the 251st Sun Devil to be selected in the professional draft after teammate N'Keal Harry was selected with the 32nd pick in the First Round on Thursday.
Wren is the fifth Sun Devil lineman to be selected in the last 20 years, joining Sutton, Super Bowl Champion Lawrence Guy (2011), Dexter Davis, future Hall of Famer Terrell Suggs (2003) and Erik Flowers (2000).
Wren was a 2019 Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection as a defensive lineman and started every game during his senior season. He concluded his senior season with 43 tackles (27 solo), 4.5 tackles for loss and a sack – all career bests. He was rewarded the Tim Landers Iron Man Award by his Sun Devil teammates due to his work ethic in the weight room and was a team captain for ASU all season.
As a senior, Wren posted a positive run impact score on 19.2 percent of rushing plays during the regular season, the sixth-best total among all Pac-12 Front Seven players. It was the 23rd-best percentage among all defensive interior players in the FBS.
He was the eighth-highest graded defensive interior player in the Pac-12 on running plays this season with an 81.1 score. He had 23 defensive "stops" this season, tied for fourth among all Pac-12 interior defenders.
He showed his athletic ability by also grading as the 15th-highest graded defensive lineman in the FBS when dropping back in coverage.
Manny Wilkins completed his Sun Devil career sitting at 8,624 career passing yards, good for fifth in Sun Devil football history and signed with the Green Bay Packers on Saturday.
His 704 career completions are good for fourth in program lore while his 52 career touchdown passes are 6th in program history.
Wilkins totaled 20 career rushing touchdowns in a Sun Devil uniform, including 8 rushing touchdowns this season, the highest mark among Pac-12 quarterbacks. Wilkins has 20 rushing touchdowns in his career, good for second among all ASU quarterbacks in school history behind only Mark Malone (21).
Wilkins accounted for 71 career touchdowns (51 passing and 20 rushing) and joined Jake Plummer (1996) and Taylor Kelly (2013) as the only other Sun Devil quarterbacks to beat both SoCal schools and Arizona in the same season.
As a senior, he accumulated 452 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground – both career-bests. Wilkins had a 118.5 NFL passer rating when facing blitzing plays this season - the 11th-best mark in the country.
Quinn Bailey signed as a free agent with the Denver Broncos. He started every game at right tackle for ASU this season and made 35 starts over his career at ASU.
Bailey was for 20thamong all offensive tackles in the FBS with just one sack allowed this season. His 12 total pressures allowed were 7th among all Pac-12 offensive tackles and tied for 36th among all FBS tackles nationally.
Bailey was the 34th-highest graded offensive tackle as a pass blocker in the regular season, according to Pro Football Focus (84.2).
Casey Tucker will continue his career as a free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles. He started at three positions over the course of the season, seeing time at left tackle, left guard and right tackle.
The duo were pivotal in paving the way for the conference's leading rusher in Eno Benjamin and helped anchor an offensive line that allowed just 15 sacks during the regular season – good for the third-fewest allowed by a Sun Devil offensive line in program history.
ASU had six games during the regular season where it didn't allow a sack. Since at least 2000, no ASU team had had more two such games in an entire season. ASU hadn't finished in Top-100 in fewest sacks allowed per game since 2011 (74th). In fact, since 2003 (as far back as easily accessible team rankings go), ASU has finished in the top-100 just 3 times, and never better than 70th. ASU finished 14th in the FBS this season with 1.23 allowed per game.
Jalen Harvey signed as a free agent with the Seattle Seahawks after one lone and productive season as a defensive back on the Sun Devils following a promising showing as a wide receiver his first three seasons.
Harvey was second on team in tackles (70), despite not playing the entirety of games in the season and having not played a snap of defense prior to this season. The 70 tackles were the third most by a safety in the Pac-12 this season.
His 40 tackles on rushing plays within 8 yards of the line of scrimmage is the third-most among all safeties in the Pac-12 and within the Top 25 of safeties in the FBS despite the games missed. His 20 defensive "stops" in the regular season were tied for fourth among Pac-12 safeties while his 5.3 positive run impact percentage led all safeties in the Pac-12 and were 30th among all safeties in the FBS.
His junior season as a wide receiver, Harvey set career highs with 33 receptions for 558 yards while he was a perfect 14-for-14 on third down receptions and conversions on the year.
Doug Subtyl signed with the Cleveland Browns as an UDFA after providing depth to the Sun Devils for two seasons. Subtyl's story and path as a Haitian immigrant to Division I student-athlete to college graduate and now to a spot on an NFL team is one of the great feel-good stories on an already exciting day for the program.
