SAN FRANCISCO – After another strong season in the classroom, Arizona State gymnastics placed six Gym Devils on the Pac-12 All-Academic Fist Team, two on the second team and one on the honorable mention list, as announced by the conference on Wednesday.
The nine student-athletes earning conference academic honors ties last season's program record. However, the six Gym Devils on the first team is a new program record, surpassing the previous high of five in 2011. The six on the first team are Corinne Belkoff, Jessica Ginn, Anne Kuhm, Kaitlyn Szafranski, Ashley Szafranski and Heather Udowitch. On the second team, the Gym Devils represented are Morgan Hart and Morgan Wilson. Justine Callis is the Sun Devil receiving an honorable mention.
For many Gym Devils, this is not their first time receiving all-academic awards. Kuhm and Kaitlyn Szafranski are the only two newcomers to all-academic awards, this being their second year with the program. For the seniors, this is Belkoff's second nod (First Team, 2017), Udowitch's third (Second Team, 2017; First Team, 2018), Wilson's third (Honorable Mention, 2017 and 2018) and Callis' third (Honorable Mention, 2017 and 2018). Ginn and Ashley Szafranski are now back-to-back honorees, Ginn being on the first team both years and Szafranski going from the second team to the first team. Hart has been on the second team for two consecutive years.
The Gym Devils have continued to adhere to Arizona State's rich tradition of athletic and academic excellence under the direction of head coach Jay Santos. Last season, the program set a record for all-academic nods with 13 earning WCGA Scholastic All-American awards, also a record. In 2017, the program placed seven student-athletes on Pac-12 All-Academic teams, while ten members of the squad garnered Scholastics All-American recognitions (NACGC/W).
To be eligible for selection to an All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and must have participated in at least 50 percent of competitions this regular season. First-year student-athletes are not eligible for Pac-12 All-Academic Teams.
