EUGENE – The No. 10 Sun Devil baseball team bounced back from its first loss of the season, a heartbreaking 12-inning affair on Saturday, to take the series on the road against the Oregon Ducks on Sunday with a 7-3 victory at PK Park in Eugene, Ore.
The Sun Devils moved to 22-1 on the season and 5-1 in Pac-12 action with the effort.
ASU again stifled the Oregon offense, holding the Ducks to three runs behind a solid start from RJ Dabovich and an exceptional outing in relief from Sam Romero. Dabovich earned the win, going 5.1 innings with four strikeouts while scattering four hits while showing off some competitive moxie as he pitched with an edge throughout.
Romero spelled him in relief and was impressive, going 3.2 scoreless innings to close things out and earn his first save of the season just a couple days after earning his first win on Wednesday against Cal Baptist. Romero struck out four and didn't walk any, adding two defensive assists in the process while stranding seven Oregon batters.
The Sun Devil offense handled the rest, exploding in a four-run fourth inning to take the lead for good.
Trevor Hauver was 2-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored. Spencer Torkelson, Hunter Bishop and Gage Workman all added multi-hit games as well while Alika Williams had two RBIs out of the cleanup spot in the order.
ASU jumped out early, as Williams plated one in the top of the first with a sac fly and followed that with a two-out RBI bunt single in the third to go up 2-0.
The Sun Devils helped Oregon out in the bottom of the frame, allowing the Ducks to tie things up with the help of a leadoff walk and an error.
ASU was unfazed, however, bouncing right back out in the fourth to drop a four-spot and take command of the game. Sam Ferri and Hunter Bishop each had RBI doubles – Bishop's two-out double bringing in two - in the frame while Gage Workman scored on a wild pitch to give ASU a 6-2 lead.
Dabovich came back out in the bottom half of the frame and humbled the Oregon lineup, urging batter's to step into the box while as he retired the side to set the tone of the remainder of the game.
Oregon tacked one back on in the fifth after taking advantage of questionable foul ball call that looked like an inning-ending strikeout but Dabovich settled in after the tough ruling and got a strikeout to strand two runners and escape the frame with minimal damage done.
Romero took over for Dabovich with one out in the fifth and twirled an impressive couple innings, deftly working around baserunners and doing his part defensively as well to keep Oregon scoreless.
The effort from Romero marked a largely solid outing for the Sun Devil pitching rotations, which allowed runs in just five of the 30 innings played on the weekend.
Hauver gave ASU some insurance in the top of the ninth with a leadoff homer, his seventh of the season.
The Sun Devils will return home this week for a three-game Pac-12 series against in-state rival Arizona. The series will get underway on Friday evening with each game scheduled to be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
