PHOENIX – Four home runs by three different players powered the Sun Devil Baseball team to a series sweep with a resounding 13-2 win over Michigan State on Sunday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The Sun Devils moved to 11-0 on the season, the team's longest winning streak and longest streak to open a season since going 24-0 to kick off 2010. ASU also recorded 10 or more runs for the seventh time on the year. ASU's four home runs on the day give the Sun Devils 16 on the season – a total that will likely rank in the Top-15 nationally following games this weekend.
Trevor Hauver had two home runs in this game, including one that led off the game. Hunter Bishop and Carter Aldrete also went big fly for the Sun Devils. Hauver, Aldrete and Alika Williams all had three RBIs in the contest.
Hauver was 2-for-5 on the day with his two dingers to give him three home runs on the week. Williams notched three doubles in the contest – a career high – as he went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Myles Denson continued to rake for the Sun Deviils, going 3-for-5 in his fourth start of the season. Denson has multiple hits in each of his starts this year. Spencer Torkelson drew three walks and came about two inches shy of his third home run of the season, adding a run in the effort.
RJ Dabovich was credited with the win after pitching six innings, striking out five batters and only giving up one run on four hits and two walks. It was his second quality start in as many outings.
The offense came rolling out the gate right away for the Sun Devils. Hauver started the scoring with a leadoff home run to right center field, only to be answered by Bishop with his own solo shot and his third home run of the series. ASU scored twice more to lead 4-0 after one inning.
Arizona State extended their lead to 6-0 after bringing two more runs in the second inning of an Aldrete single to bring two across.
Both teams traded a run in the third inning to make it 7-1 in favor of the Sun Devils.
Aldrete hit the team's third home run of the game with a solo shot to center field in the fourth inning.
Hauver had his second leadoff home run in the seventh inning. In the same inning, the Sun Devils batted around the order, adding five total runs to go up 13-1 on the Spartans. Williams added another double in the frame that brought two across while Hauver would come back to the plate and draw a bases-loaded RBI walk for his third RBI of the contest.
Michigan State scored a run in the ninth before Gage Workman recorded the final out to end the game. The Sun Devils got a pair of solid innings of relief in the 7thand 8thinnings from Chaz Montoya and Dom Cacchione as the duo combined to record two scoreless inning with only one hit allowed and three strikeouts.
Up next, the Sun Devils are scheduled for a midweek series against Cal State Fullerton. The time and location are to be determined due to potential inclement weather in Fullerton. ASU will host the two games here at home if Fullerton cannot. Follow @ASU_Baseball on Twitter for updates on this series and the rest of the season.
