STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 17 Arizona State women's basketball team was not able to come away with a split on its road trip to the Bay Area as it fell to seventh-ranked Stanford, 71-50 on Sunday.
 
A 21-4 run by the Cardinal in the third quarter proved to be the difference in the game as the Sun Devils were even with Stanford after one quarter and were within four points with under two minutes to go in the first half. 
 
Stanford (22-5, 13-3 Pac-12) hit 62 percent of its shots in the game, including 78 percent in the second half when the Cardinal outscored the Sun Devils 42-28.
 
Courtney Ekmark led the Sun Devils (18-8, 9-6) with 10 points, while Robbi Ryan and Kianna Ibis added seven points each. 
 
Charnea Johnson-Chapman led ASU's rebounding effort with five boards in the game. For the game, Stanford was plus-10 in rebounding (33-23), representing only the fourth time this season that ASU was outrebounded by the opposition.
 
Reili Richardson was the only Sun Devil with multiple assists in the game (4), while Ryan and Ekmark tied for the team lead in steals with two apiece.
 
Kiana Williams (15 points), Alanna Smith (14 points), Dijonai Carrington (13 points) and Lexie Hull (11 points) all scoren in double figures for the Cardinal.
 
The Cardinal led by as many as five in the first quarter before the Sun Devils scored five straight points – free throw by Iris Mbulito and layups by Kiara Russell and Johnson-Chapman – to knot the score at 14-14 after one quarter.
 
A 10-0 run gave Stanford its first double-digit lead of the game after Hull's layup put the Cardinal up 26-16 with 3:25 left in the first half.
 
The Sun Devils would answer back as Ryan (3-pointer), Mbulito (free throw) and Ryan (jumper) combined to score six consecutive points to pull ASU back within four points, 26-22, with 1:57 remaining in the half.
 
Carrington, who tied for the team lead with Kiana Williams with eight first-half points for Stanford, scored the last three points of the quarter to extend Stanford's lead to 29-22 at the break.
 
Johnson-Chapman's layup to open the third quarter got the Sun Devils within five points. Stanford would answer by reeling off eight points in succession to go up 37-24.
 
Elenga would provide ASU's response as the senior post scored on back-to-back layups to cut ASU's deficit to single digits, 37-28. Stanford would not allow ASU to get any closer as it scored the game's next 13 points to give the Cardinal a 50-28 lead after Carrington's layup with 1:55 left in the third quarter.
 
Five free throws by Ekmark in the last 47 seconds of the quarter helped ASU get back within 16 points entering the third quarter.
 
Russell's 3-point play early in the fourth quarter got ASU within 14 points before a 9-0 Stanford run put the Cardinal back up by 23 midway through the third quarter.
