TEMPE – Two Sun Devil newcomers and two ASU veterans had career days Friday as William Paulson and Fearghal Curtin both added their names to the Arizona State record books at the Iowa State Classic, and Jessica Barreira and Matthew Eckles topped their personal bests at the Don Kirby Elite.

The track in the Lied Recreation Center has been a factory of fast times in the distance events in recent memory, and today's competitors kept the tradition alive, including a handful of distance Devils.

Curtin kicked to a win in the 5,000-meter run in a lifetime best 13:52.26, good enough for fourth in school history in the event. The sophomore is the first Sun Devil to go under 14 minutes in the indoor 5K since CJ Albertson set the school record back in 2017.

Paulson landed on yet another indoor top-10 list when he finished eighth in the 3,000-meter invitational. He already owns the fourth-fastest mile time in school history, and with his run today of 7:58.04, the senior is the sixth-fastest Sun Devil ever at the distance.

In his first 3,000 since February of 2018, Paulson joined BYU's Logan Orndorf as the only man in the MPSF this year with a sub-4 mile and a 3,000-meter mark faster than 8 minutes.

John Reniewicki, Jackson Lewis and Nick Shampoe all set personal bests in their respective events. Reniewicki and Shampoe both joined Curtin in the 5K, and Lewis dropped a 12 second best in the 3,000.

Just across the state line in Albuquerque, Jessica Barreira scored a personal best in the long jump with a mark of 6.28m/20-7.75 feet. The 10th-best leap in school history came on the Sun Devil senior's opening attempt and rocketed her into the top-10 in the country.

She'll return to the runway tomorrow in the women's triple jump to look to improve her position on the NCAA descending order list in that event, too.

Matthew Eckles took sole possession of fourth in school history when he cleared 5.33m/17-5.75 feet. The senior and former Pac-12 champion got his personal best on the second attempt at the bar and moved into second in the MPSF in the event.

Beatrice Llano finished third in the women's weight throw and Kaylee Antill recorded a season best in the event when she dropped an 18.91m/62-0.50-foot throw that gave her eighth place overall on the day.

The Sun Devils will return to action Saturday for the conclusion of the Iowa State Classic, Don Kirby Elite and Tyson Invitational. Samantha Noennig and Tommi Hintnaus open their weekends tomorrow in Albuquerque, and Alexis Nichols and Bianca Tinoco will line up in Ames.
