Down Early, Remy Martin's Career Night Helps Sun Devils Win in Berkeley

In the first Pac-12 road game of the year, Remy Martin's career night helped bring Arizona State back from a 14-point deficit in the first half to an 80-66 victory over the California Golden Bears on Wednesday night.
 
Martin scored 24 points to surpass his previous career-best of 21, which he tied for on Dec. 15 in a victory at Georgia. Martin also had a career-high five threes on seven attempts and added eight assists to his stat line. Zylan Cheatham was second in scoring with 17 points, 13 in the second half, while Rob Edwards and Luguentz Dort each scored 13.

Arizona State (11-4, 2-1 Pac-12) did not have a strong start to this game, making only one of their first 12 shots. The Golden Bears (5-10, 0-3) took advantage of ASU's slow start and eventually built their lead to 14 at the 6:23 mark in the first half. 

Martin, however, was determined to keep his team in the game, scoring 12 points of his 24 points to bring the Sun Devils within two points at the end of the first half.
 
Coming out of the locker room, ASU quickly took the lead. Martin continued playing well, including a streak of hitting a three, forcing Cal to commit a turnover and then going back down the floor and hitting another three to give Arizona State a nine-point lead. 
 

ROAD NOTE: Remy Martin's 24 points off the bench at California on Jan. 9 tied for the fifth-most by a Sun Devil in a road game in the past 30 seasons. Only five Sun Devils have scored at least 21 points off the bench in road games in that time, with Martin and Torian Graham doing it twice.

The lead for ASU grew to 14 after another three by Martin. Arizona State sealed the game after breaking away from a full-court press by California, leading to back-to-back dunks.

ASU shot 47.5 percent (28-of-59) on the game and 57.7 percent (15-of-26) in the second half, flipping the script from their shooting woes early in the game.

The Sun Devils play at Stanford next to finish their Bay Area road trip on Saturday, tipping off at 3 p.m. PT. The game can be viewed on Pac-12 Networks and heard on ESPN 620 AM.

VS. CAL: ASU earned its 11th sweep over Cal last year with wins of 81-73 in Berkeley and 84-53 in Tempe...ASU is now 4-2 in Berkeley in its last five trips...ASU did not allow a Cal three-pointer in the last meeting (0-of-18).
