TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University and Sun Devil Athletics have begun a series of capital improvements to Phoenix Municipal Stadium, highlighted by a state-of-the-art batting facility.

Construction on the $4.8M project, funded entirely through philanthropic support via the Sun Devil Club, began on June 6 with a completion date set for early November.

"This project is a great development for the Sun Devil Baseball program and Phoenix Municipal Stadium," Ray Anderson, Vice President for University Athletics, said. "One of the top collegiate baseball stadiums in the nation is set to get even better – for our current and future student-athletes, our fans, and our community."

The five-month project will also include the installation of a new outfield fence, relocating the home and visiting team bullpens behind the new fence, and changing the dimensions of the ballpark.

"We take pride in having one of the elite baseball facilities in the country and this project will only help to solidify that status," Head Coach Tracy Smith said. "The changes to Phoenix Municipal Stadium will benefit our program from a player development and recruiting standpoint, as well as helping to improve the game day experience for our fans. We are thankful to all of those that helped make this possible."

The batting facility, which will be situated along the right-field line, will include three indoor hitting bays and a soft toss area, and garage-style doors that will afford the facility an open-air option, and a viewing deck with a hospitality area to enhance the game day experience for Sun Devil Nation.

CORE Construction is serving as the contractor for the project and Gould/Evans oversaw the design. CORE Construction employs eight former Sun Devil letterwinners, including swimming alum Emerson Ward (2001-05), football alumni Mike Marcisz (2007-11), Kody Koebensky (2009-2013), Corey Adams (2009-2013), Jay Quitmeyer (2014-15) and Andrew Sampson (2008-2011), and baseball alumni Eric Melbostad (2013-2016) and Logan Spears (2012-14).

Sun Devil Baseball moved into Phoenix Municipal Stadium following the 2014 season and over the years ASU and SDA have made a number of capital improvements to the facility, including a clubhouse redesign complete with a player's lounge, academic center, nutrition room, weight room and training room, and the installation of a video board.

The left and right field lines pay homage to legendary head coach Jim Brock and letterwinner Cory Hahn, who wore numbers 33 and 34, respectively.
