Tempe, Ariz. – The No. 8 Sun Devil Wrestling team (1-1) opened up their home schedule at Wells Fargo Arena Saturday, falling 20-15 to No. 24 UNC.
No. 6 Ryan Millhof jumped off to a quick start for ASU to start the day, with a 3-0 decision over Joe Heilmann at 125 lbs. to give the Maroon and Gold a 3-0 lead. Josiah Kline was able to push the advantage to 6-0 after completing the decision victory over James Szymanski at 133 lbs.
A.C. Headlee (141) earned the first win for UNC, after a major decision victory, 12-4, over redshirt sophomore Cory Crooks. Back-to-back decision victories for the Tar Heels followed at 149 and 157 and UNC gained a 10-6 advantage at intermission.
No. 7 Josh Shields (165) countered the attack, picking up the third win by decision for the Devils, beating Josh McClure, 14-8. The Tar Heels would eventually push the lead to 16-9 after Devin Kane won by pin at 174 lbs.
Teammates No. 1 Zahid Valencia and No. 17 Kordell Norfleet both moved up a weight classes to 184 and 197, respectively, and earned a pair of decision victories.
With ASU down 16-15, freshman Brady Daniel went up against his older brother, Cory Daniel, in the final matchup of the day. Brady came up short in the end, falling by way of major decision.
