TEMPE – The Sun Devils had a solid day at the 24th Thunderbird Invitational as four women picked up singles wins.
ASU opened the second day of competition in singles play, facing women from Mississippi State and TCU.
"It was another great day in terms of giving our girls exactly what we need in preparation for the Spring, which is competition against quality opponents," associate head coach Matt Langley said. "I thought as a whole we made some improvements and were better today than we were yesterday. That's always something we are looking for in these type of events."
The Sun Devils teamed up with Pepperdine to defeat all four TCU women in the morning session. Freshman Samantha Alicea defeated TCU's Stevie Kennedy 6-3, 6-1 and Sasa Klanecek took down Horned Frog junior Chloe Hule, 6-2, 6-3.
The Bulldogs split matches with ASU, 2-2, with Savannah Slaysman defeating Emmanouela Antonaki in three sets and freshman Grace Koester downing Magda Adaloglou 6-2, 6-4.
Tereza Kolarova dropped her first set 6-2, but came back to flip the score on Anastasia Rentouli in set two to force a third. Rentouli held off Kolarova to win the third set 6-4 and take the match.
Mississippi State's Sara Lizariturry bested Sun Devil junior Sammi Hampton, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles play, Hampton and Slaysman combined to defeat Kansas State's Mesquita/Linares, 7-6 (6).
Grace Koester and Alicea defeated a pairing of Gheorghita from Kansas State and Arakawa from Washington.
The Thunderbird concludes Sunday as play starts at 9 a.m. MST when the Devils open doubles play against Mississippi State.
"We ended up getting wins in four of our six singles matches played and in two of our three doubles matches," Langley said. "We're looking forward to more good tests tomorrow and leaving everything out on the court, to finish the tournament strong."
