TEMPE – The Sun Devil track and field squads closed out the Pac-12+/Big Ten Challenge Saturday with impressive showings from ASU veterans and newcomers as the women finished fourth and the men took eighth in the final standings.

Just like Friday, Ewen kicked off the meet for ASU with a win, this time in the discus. Her mark came from her second throw of the series that landed 60.01m/196-10 feet away from the ring, and was just six inches shy of her personal best that was set last season.

"The one thing I think people take for granted is just Maggie Ewen in general," head coach Greg Kraft said. "For her to be able to train for three totally different events, and be that good at all of them, people don't realize how difficult that is."

After two weekends of outdoor competition, Ewen sits at the top of the hammer throw list and is second in the discus throw by just over a meter in the West Region.

Later in the evening, under the lights at Sun Angel Stadium, Alethia Marrero followed up her sprints treble from a week ago with an 800-meter run for the Sun Devil record books.

Marrero won the event in 2:05.33, the joint-fifth-best time in Sun Devil history, and the best time by a Sun Devil woman since 2014.

"With the greats we've had here, that's pretty special," sprints coach Devin West said. "But, we knew she was special when she got here – she's an All-American, she's done all of that before. She's never opened up in the 800 in March, and this was her fastest opening time ever, so that's enlightening and exciting for us."

By outrunning Colorado's Elissa Mann on the homestretch, Marrero secured her place at the top of the West and a competitive Pac-12 conference.

"I think Alethia really brings some legitimate experience to our program," Kraft said. "I think it's important that you have people who have already walked the walk because it can rub off on people like Sha'Maya [Flanagan] or Bianca [Tinoco], who are young, and also have an influence on people like Kalei [Matthews] who came to from a junior college but still might need an example."

Also making her mark in the race was the sophomore Tinoco, who finished sixth and ran a personal best 2:09.66. Including tonight, Tinoco has set a PR in three-straight 800-meter races dating back to the Texas A&M Quadrangular in January. The time has Tinoco at 11th in the region and sixth in the Pac-12.

True freshman Kevin Wilkinson also had a big night in the men's version of the 800. He finished eighth, but ran a 1:51.26 for a near four-second personal best in the event.

"Kevin went out and got third in his heat because he made a bold move in those last 20 meters," Kraft said. "If he's running 1:50 or 1:49 by the time Pac-12's come around, he's a guy that can make that move again and make the final in that race."

Over in the field events, Nathan Hiett cleared 5.17m/16-11.5 feet to take second in the pole vault and freshman Michael Chadwick took seventh in the event.

Sophomore Elijah Hughes, nearly cleared 2.10m/6-10.75 in the high jump, but settled for third-place overall when he jumped 2.05m/6-8.75.

In the women's shot put, Samantha Noennig finished second with her throw of 16.63m/54-6.75 feet. The mark is fourth in the West and eighth in school history. Noennig also finished fourth in the discus to start the day with a personal best heave of 50.70m/166-4 feet.

The women's 3,000 saw Samantha Ortega lead the way for ASU again. She started in the back of the trail group, but worked her way up for the entirety of the race and managed to run herself into third place on the homestretch with freshman Daan Haven just behind her in fourth.

One of the last events of the evening provided the most excitement for the crowd at Sun Angel Stadium as the ASU women's 4x400-meter relay team ran a season's best 3:39.54 to take third.

Flanagan led off for ASU's A-team and handed off to Marrero just behind the team from LSU and the senior kept the Devils close to the Tiger squad before handing off to Matthews.

Matthews did her job by running the third-fastest split of the day by any woman of 53.55, and Tinoco anchored ASU to third for their best 4x4 time in three years.

After two-straight weekends of competition, the Devils will be dormant for the last weekend of March as they rest up for their third and final home meet of the season, the Sun Angel Classic, scheduled for April 6-7.
