TEMPE – Only a week after the completion of the indoor season, the Arizona State Sun Devil track and field program will showcase its new state-of-the-art track with the first meet of the outdoor season, Friday and Saturday.

Named for legendary Sun Devil head coach Senon "Baldy" Castillo, some of the nation's best will convene in Tempe for the invitational, including athletes from Texas A&M, Eastern Michigan, Louisville and Minnesota.

For the Sun Devils, the dawn of a new outdoor season brings hope to some athletes who are looking to build on the groundwork laid during the indoor season.

The Sun Devil men's pole vaulters leaped their way into the indoor record books and will likely be looking to do the same under the sun this season. They'll be led by reigning Pac-12 champion Matthew Eckles, but with Michael Chadwick's clearance of 5.20m/17-0.5 feet, all five of the Sun Devils have personal bests over last year's cutoff for NCAA West Regional qualification.

One Sun Devil who didn't compete in the winter, but is expected to make noise in the spring is graduate transfer Alethia Marrero.

She joined ASU in the fall for her final season of eligibly, and the Indiana State transfer is no stranger to elite competition as she has competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 800-meter run in back-to-back years coming into 2018. She will make her Sun Devil debut Saturday in the 400-meter dash.

Fresh off her second national title, and first under a roof, Magdalyn Ewen will open her final season Friday afternoon in the event she holds the NCAA record in – the hammer throw.

The defending hammer throw champion will also stand in the ring for the discus competition Saturday morning.

Friday's action at Sun Angel Stadium gets going at noon with Ewen and the hammer throw. The first official event on the new Joe Selleh track will be the women's 2,000-meter steeplechase at 7 p.m., and Friday's events conclude after the men finish the 1,500.

The women's discus opens things up on Saturday, and field events will run until the men's shot put at 3:30.

In the meantime, the track will be in use beginning at 2 with the women's 100-meter hurdles, and the track will be in use throughout the day until the 6:08-scheduled men's 4x400-meter relay wraps up the meet.

A full schedule of events can be found here, and ticketing information and heat sheets will be available on thesundevils.com.
