Hiett, Sun Devils Soar in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF – The Sun Devil track and field team ended the regular season on a high when they competed more than a mile above sea level at the NAU Tune-Up in Flagstaff at the Walkup Skydome, with Nathan Hiett and Samantha Noennig leading the way.

The Skydome was good to the Devils as the squad recorded a handful personal bests, including Samantha Noennig's shot put mark that was the sixth-best throw in Sun Devil history.

Last time in Flagstaff, Noennig set a personal best that, coming into the day, was No. 17 on the NCAA's descending order qualification list for the national meet. Her throw of 16.71m/54-10.00 feet was just under the 16th-best mark in the country, leaving the Sun Devil freshman on the bubble for one more week.

She still has one more opportunity to move up the list and into a qualifying position at the MPSF Championships in Seattle next weekend.

The last event of the evening, the men's pole vault, saw the Sun Devil senior, Hiett, clear the sixth-best height in school history and nearly move into the top-three in ASU history.

Hiett was the last of the Devil in the competition that started with 25 collegiate and unattached athletes. He soared past his previous personal best of 5.15m and topped 5.30m/17-4.5 feet, becoming the fourth active Devil to record a top-10 pole vault mark this season.

By clearing the bar, Hiett moved into the top-three in the conference and gave ASU four of the top-six places in the event in the MPSF.

Once again, Shaunie Morrison won the 60-meter hurdles in Flagstaff, and Alexandra Williams joined her in the final, finishing third overall in a personal-best 8.60 seconds.

Marcus Howard clocked an 8.32 in the men's 60-meter hurdles final to move closer to the No. 6 spot in school history. He is now less than one-hundredth of a second out from a tie for fifth all-time.

Daan Haven also picked up a win for ASU, clocking 5:17.29 in the women's mile to lead two other Sun Devils in a sweep of the top-three. Courtney Lewis finished second and Megan Reniewicki took third.

The third Sun Devil win on the day came in the women's triple jump from Jessica Barreira.

True freshman Emily Gallegos Francksen set a 5-second personal best in the indoor 800-meter run when she took second in the event in 2:15.45.

Herbert Polk and Kevin Wilkinson both took third in their respective events of the 400-and 800-meter runs. Polk's time of 48.65 was his best this season by nearly two seconds.

With the regular season wrapped up, Kraft and ASU turn their attention to the postseason. The first meet looming on the schedule is the conference championships in Seattle next Friday. At last year's MPSF Championships, the men's team finished fifth, the women took sixth and both teams finished ahead of the University of Arizona.
