NAU FRIDAY NIGHT CHALLENGE RESULTS

FLAGSTAFF – It was just the first meet of 2018 for Arizona State, but Sun Devil senior Magdalyn Ewen showed no signs of rust at the NAU Friday Night Challenge as she set the Arizona State record in the women's indoor shot put with a throw of more than 60 feet.

Ewen's mark of 18.44m/60-6.00 is one of the top-10 collegiate marks of all-time, and the throw bested the previous school record, set by Sarah Stevens in 2007, by nearly a foot. Ewen jumps to the top of the NCAA in 2018 in the event, and is the only woman so far this season to record a mark of more than 18 meters.

"I feel really good. I didn't foul any of my throws, which is usually a big thing for me, and I threw over 18 meters twice, which is like two PRs for me," Ewen said. "Even the other four throws were all in the high-17 meters, so I'm really happy with it and I really hope that trend continues."

The record set the tone for a day that saw four more event wins for the Sun Devils, including first-place finishes in the women's 60-meter hurdles, men's 800-meter run, women's distance medley relay and men's pole vault.

True freshman Cole Riddle's Sun Devil debut lived up to the hype as he not only won the pole vault competition, but also landed in ASU's top-10 all-time list in the process. With his height of 5.18m/17-0.00 feet, Riddle planted himself at eighth all-time in just his first outing in maroon and gold.

"I warmed up pretty well, so I knew it was going to be a good day," Riddle said. "I was having fun with it and didn't really have an expectation. I just wanted to see where I was."

Riddle was not alone near the top of the competition, however, as graduate-transfer Grant Sisserson finished third, freshman Michael Chadwick took fourth, Nathan Hiett was fifth and reigning Pac-12 champion Matthew Eckles grabbed sixth.

"There's a lot of potential in the pole vault squad," Riddle said. "All of us can jump pretty high and a few of us are definitely 5.50 guys."

After a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter dash, Canada international Shaunie Morrison grabbed a win in the 60-meter hurdles. She dashed to the win in a personal-best time of 8.32 seconds, the seventh-best time in school history.

"It felt pretty good," Morrison said. "I was a little nervous going into it, but coach [Devin] West made sure there was no pressure on me for the first meet because he knows I get kind of nervous under pressure. We just took it as a light meet so next week I can go pretty hard."

Morrison's season-opening mark vaults the senior into the top-10 of the NCAA and to the top of the MPSF.

Another true freshman, Adam Meyer, came away with a debut win in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.08. He took the race by three seconds in an impressive run at altitude.

The women's DMR team of Anna Pruter, Bianca Tinoco, Alexis Nichols and Samantha Ortega won the event in 12:32.41, more than a minute better than the second-place quartet from Grand Canyon.

West's sprints group had a big day of PRs to go along with Morrison's hurdles victory. Sha'Maya Flanagan finished sixth in the 200, but set a personal best with a 24.89. Courtnee Oglesby and Maya Perkins also recorded PRs in the 200, and in the 60-meter hurdles, Alexandra Williams' 8.82 gave her a fourth-place finish and a PR.

Marcus Howard's 60-meter hurdles time of 8.49 earned the true freshman a personal best and a runner-up finish.

With the lid officially lifted on the 2018 season, the Sun Devils head to College Station, Texas, next weekend for the Texas A&M Team Invitational to face what is expected to be some of the NCAA's best competition.
