PHOENIX – The Sun Devil Baseball team fell to No. 13 Stanford in game two of the weekend series, 13-8, on Saturday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Arizona State (19-24, 6-14 Pac-12) continued to chip away at an early 11-0 Cardinal lead to make it a game into the late innings. The charge was led by first baseman Lyle Lin and outfielder Hunter Bishop who both had multi-RBI games.
Arizona State starting left-hander Eli Lingos could not find his rhythm early in the start. The southpaw allowed eight runs, five of which were earned, through two innings while striking out three.
Stanford (30-12, 13-7 Pac-12) starter Andrew Summerville held the Devils in check through three innings, but the Devils would eventually find success against the left-hander. Summerville would be relieved in the seventh inning, finishing with the line of 6.1 innings pitched allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out three.
Things got off to an inopportune start for ASU as it fell into an early 11-0 hole through three and a half innings. Left-hander Reagan Todd came on in relief of the starter Lingos to start the third. Todd would give the bullpen a break, pitching the next four innings for the Sun Devils allowing three runs on four hits while striking out one.
Despite the large deficit, the Devils weren't going quietly into the night, slowing picking away at things with runs in five consecutive innings to keep things interesting.
Outfielder Gage Canning had a solo home run in the fourth, his fifth of the season, to open the Sun Devil scoring. Lyle Lin added a two-run shot of his own in the sixth, his second of the season, to help lead the comeback attempt and cut the deficit to 11-4. Infielders Jeremy McCuin and Andrew Snow each had an RBI in the fifth and seventh, respectively, as well inching the Sun Devils closer.
Right-hander James Ryan relieved Todd to start the seventh, throwing a scoreless seventh to keep the Sun Devils within striking distance. Stanford would add a run in the top of the eighth thanks to an RBI-single to push the lead up to 12-5.
The Sun Devils cut the deficit to four runs in the bottom of the eighth as Hunter Bishop pushed two across with a single before scoring himself on a wild pitch a couple batters later to bring ASU back within 12-8.
Left-handers relievers Garvin Alston and Tanner West each pitched an inning of relief, allowing one run a piece in their only innings of relief.
Stanford would tack on another run in the ninth to extend the lead to 13-8. Cardinal closer Colton Hock came on to retire the side in the ninth to give Stanford the 13-8 victory.
