BERKELEY, Calif. -- Sophomore Gage Canning knocked three hits in back-to-back games and ASU put up five runs in the ninth, but Sun Devil Baseball fell, 9-6, to Cal on Friday night at Evans Diamond.

The Bears (13-14, 5-5) dominated the scoreboard for the first two innings, putting up two runs in the first frame off a two-run home run. Starting lefty Eli Lingos (3-3) departed after recording two outs, as he had been experiencing flu-like symptoms throughout the week. California sent three more across the plate in the second frame to pull a 5-0 lead early on.

In the Devils' (12-16, 2-8) half of the third frame, Canning would push himself all the way to third base off a single, stolen base and would swipe third off a passed ball. He took home with the infield playing back off a groundout by sophomore Jeremy McCuin, but the Devils would be quieted until their half of the ninth inning.

Senior Eder Erives, who took over after Lingos exited in the first, would contribute five innings of work on the day, allowing five runs off seven hits while striking out two in his eighth appearance -- and longest -- of the season.

Scoring two more in both the sixth and eigth innings, the Bears would pull out to a comfortable 9-1 lead.

Arizona State would call to the pen with two on and two outs in the sixth, and redshirt sophomore Reagan Todd answered the call. The Colorado-native would use just two pitches to induce an inning-ending groundout, limiting the damage. Todd would come back to pitch a scoreless seventh before giving way to sophomore Chris Isbell at the beginning of the home half of the eigth. The Bears would tag Isbell for two runs off three hits in his second appearance of the season.

The Maroon and Gold mounted a substantial rally in their final three outs, starting off with a leadoff triple by junior Andrew Shaps. Pinch hitter Tyler Williams would follow with a walk to put two on with none out. California started to lose composure on the mound, with a wild pitch scoring Shaps from third and advancing Williams to second. Junior Andrew Snow would step up to the plate and strike out, but a wild pitch would force a dropped third strike, allowing Snow to reach and advance to second while Williams would display heads up base running to score all the way from second, bringing the score to 9-3.

Just missing his third home run of the season, freshman Carter Aldrete nailed a double to the warning track in straightaway center field, plating Snow. A bunt single by Canning and a two-run double by Sam Ferri later, the Devils would drop five runs to bring the score to the final 9-6.
