AZUSA/TORRANCE, Calif. – On day one of the three-day, three-meet weekend for the Sun Devil track and field program, three women started on the right foot with three personal bests in their respective events.
Â
Billie Jo Dytrt, Megan Reniewicki and Brittany Alexander all ran their best race of their collegiate careers.
Â
"With the steeple, breaking 11 seconds was the big goal for both of them. They both did so, but there's still a lot to work on as they mature in that event," said distance coach Louie Quintana. "I was pleased with the result, but I think ultimately if they clean up some things, they're going to run a lot faster.
Â
"The 5k for Brittany and Megan was tremendous. To break 17 minutes is a nice step to knocking on the door for the regional meet. Just under 16:30 some years puts them in contention. They both competed really well and ran PR's through 3k as well an overall PR. It's good for the whole group with that energy."
Â
Reniewicki's time was a whopping 37 seconds faster than her previous best, which she set at the Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Invitational in Tempe on March 24. Her time of 16:52.55 placed her 13th in her heat, and also draws comparison to a teammate of hers excelling in her final season.
Â
"A lot of them see what progress Chelsey [Albertson] has made in her career, as she made 16:48 as a freshman and Megan ran 16:52," said Quintana. "They look at her trajectory and are really excited to be able to do something like that."
Â
Albertson currently owns the fourth-fastest time in the 5k in ASU history (15:53.07), which she set at the Stanford Invitational just two weeks ago.
Â
Day two features several other events for the Sun Devils, with Kyle and Blake Elliott starting the day off with the 800-meter event at the Bryan Clay Invitational at 1:35 p.m.
Â
"Hopefully we can keep this momentum rolling into tomorrow," said Quintana.
