PHOENIX – The Sun Devil Baseball team fell to No. 7 Cal State Fullerton, 13-4, in the second contest of the mid-week series Wednesday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

The Sun Devil offense exploded for four runs in the second inning but were unable to add to the score as Cal State Fullerton pulled away. Ryan Lillard and Gage Canning each had two RBIs in the frame.

Freshman Tanner West showed flashes to close the game out, going a season-best 3.1 innings while shutting down the potent Titan offense.

Right-hander Fitz Stadler got the start on the bump for ASU, pitching two innings and tying a career-high with two strikeouts.

Cal State Fullerton (7-4) came out of the gates quickly, putting up two runs in the first frame to take the early lead. The Titans tacked on five runs in the next inning to take a 7-0 lead through two innings.

The Sun Devils (6-7) answered back furiously in the bottom of the second. Catcher Lyle Lin drew a walk to lead off the inning and Tyler Williams singled to put a pair of runners on base. Canning plated both with his team-leading fourth double of the season into deep right field to get the Devils on the board and reduce the lead to 7-2.

Two batters later, Lillard delivered a clutch opposite field double down the left field line to score Canning and infielder Jeremy McCuin, cutting the lead to 7-4.

Right-handed pitcher Grant Schneider entered the game for Stadler in the third inning. The Texas native recorded career-highs in innings pitched (3.2) and strike outs (4).

Cal State Fullerton responded to the ASU's big inning with one of their own, scoring two runs in the top half of the third. Schneider delivered a timely strikeout to prevent any more damage, keeping the Titans lead at 9-4.

The Titans offense was not done yet, adding four runs to push the lead to 13-4 in the sixth inning to chase Schneider.

Left-hander Tanner West came in to pitch for Schneider with two outs in the sixth. West, in a high-pressure situation, induced a fly-out to end the inning and extinguish the threat.

The freshman cruised the rest of the way, recording two strikeouts and holding the No. 7 Titans hitless for the final 3.1 innings in just his third appearance of the season.

Notes:
The Sun Devil offense tied their season-high for runs in an inning, putting up four runs in the second inning…Freshman Left-hander Tanner West pitched 3.1 scoreless innings without allowing a hit…Previously, West had compiled just one inning of work in his two appearances on the season…Lyle Lin reached base for the 12th consecutive game and is the only Sun Devil to reach base in every game this season…an Andrew Shaps single in the sixth inning extended his streak of reaching base to eight games...Shaps is riding a four-game hitting streak…with his second inning single, Jeremy McCuin has now recorded a hit in each of his last four games…
