PHOENIX – The Sun Devil baseball team fell 3-2 in Game 2 of its three-game series with Loyola Marymount Saturday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Starting left-hander Spencer Van Scoyoc gave the Sun Devils (6-4) another boost on the mound after an outstanding effort from Friday night's starter Eli Lingos. Van Scoyoc held the Lions bats at bay, keeping Loyola Marymount (5-6) scoreless until they broke through with one run in the fifth. The freshman went five innings, allowing just four hits and matched a career high with four punch outs.
Myles Denson made his first start of the season in left field, going 2-for-4 while Lyle Lin had his seventh multi-hit game of the season with another 2-for-4 outing.
Trailing 2-1 and down to their final out, LMU's infielder Phil Caulfield hit a two-out triple into right-center in the top of the ninth that would plate the game-tying run. A Texas League single on the ensuing at bat would put the Lions on top for the first time, 3-2.
Lions starting left-hander Brenton Arriaga, who had allowed just one run in his previous 14.0 IP, allowed two runs (one earned) in 5.1 innings pitched. Right-hander Codie Paiva entered in the sixth inning and finished the game for LMU, not allowing a run on his way to earning the victory.
The Lions threatened with a leadoff runner in the third, eventually placing runners on the corners with two outs. A double steal attempt was sniffed out nicely by the ASU defense, however, as shortstop Jeremy McCuin bailed out his runner in the picker between first and second to get the out on the runner coming home to end the threat.
The Devils took advantage of their opportunity in the bottom half of the inning as back-to-back singles from outfielder Andrew Shaps and catcher Lyle Lin plated infielder Andrew Snow to give ASU an early 1-0 lead.
The pitcher's duel continued until the fifth inning with three consecutive innings of scoreless ball before LMU broke through in the top of the fifth on outfielder Billy Wilson's two-out RBI double to even things at 1-1.
The Sun Devils promptly responded in the bottom half the inning, capitalizing on outfielder Gage Canning reaching second base after striking out following the LMU catcher's throwing error on the throw down to first on the wild pitch. After moving to third thanks to a Myles Denson single, Canning would score on an Andrew Snow double-play ball as ASU regained a 2-1 lead.
Right-hander Ryan Hingst came on in relief of Van Scoyoc in the sixth, quickly finding a groove in striking out two batters in his first inning of work. Hingst and left-hander Chaz Montoya would team up for a scoreless seventh to maintain the 2-1 lead for the Devils.
Reagan Todd – who earned his first career save on Friday - took the reins in the top of the eighth, striking out the side to earn a trip back to the hill in the top of the ninth.
Notes

Myles Denson, had multi-hit games…For Lin, it is his team-leading seventh multi-hit game in just the 10th game of the season for the Sun Devils…Lyle Lin reached base for the tenth consecutive game and is the only Sun Devil to reach base in every game this season…Opposing batters have hit a miniscule .163 against Spencer Van Scoyoc in his three starts this season…Carter Aldrete has a hit in six of the last seven contests…The Devils have allowed three or fewer runs in five of seven home games this season…
