PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Sun Devil baseball team dropped the second game of its weekend series against No. 2 Oregon State, falling 10-1 Friday evening at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Starting left-hander Spencer Van Scoyoc took the mound first for the Sun Devils (9-9), making his fifth start of the season. Van Scoyoc battled command issues to start his outing, but settled into the flow of the game keeping the Beavers from opening the game up. Van Scoyoc went 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits. Of the thirteen outs that Van Scoyoc recorded, 10 were of the groundball variety.
Arizona State had an opportunity to strike for a run in the third inning thanks to infielder Jackson Willeford's one-out double. The Sun Devils were unable to capitalize, however, as Oregon State starting right-hander Bryce Fehmel escaped the threat. Fehmel pounded the strike zone and kept a dangerous Arizona State lineup off the bases for most of the game on the way to his third victory of the season.
With the Devils trailing 3-0, Van Scoyoc was replaced by right-hander Jake Godfrey with one out and a pair of runners on in the fifth inning. Godfrey promptly struck out the first batter he faced, and proceeded to get out of a bases-loaded jam by inducing a flyout to left to keep the Beaver lead at 3-0.
Godfrey would throw 1.1 innings before being replaced by right-hander James Ryan. Ryan would give the bullpen a lift by striking out four batters in his 1.1 innings of work.
Oregon State would add to their 3-0 lead with a big sixth inning. A two-RBI double from outfielder Christian Donahue was the big blow of the four-run inning for Oregon State. The Beavers would tack on another run courtesy of a RBI-single from designated hitter Trevor Larnach to push their lead to 9-0.
The Sun Devils would produce their first run of the game in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Back-to-back singles from outfielder Andrew Shaps and first baseman Lyle Lin to lead off the inning set up a scoring chance for the ASU offense. After moving up to third on the next batter, Andrew Shaps scored on a wild pitch to put the Devils on the board.
Right-hander Alec Marsh took over for James Ryan at the start of the eighth inning. Marsh would go the final two innings for the Sun Devils, allowing a run on two hits while striking out a pair.
Notes:
Andrew Shaps extends his hitting streak to 10 games and has now reached base in all thirteen games he has played this season…The 10-game hitting streak is now a career-long for Andrew Shaps…Lyle Lin has now reached base at least once in 17 of his first 18 games as a Sun Devil…right-hander James Ryan (4) and Alec Marsh (3) each set their career-high in strikeouts…A seventh inning single extended Carter Aldrete's reached base streak to five games.
Up Next: The Sun Devils conclude the series against the Beavers on Saturday, March 17 at high noon. The game will be live streamed through the Pac-12 Networks online while also airing over the airwaves on 1060 AM, 100.7 HD 2 and the TuneIn app available on the baseball schedule link at thesundevils.com
