PHOENIX – The Sun Devil baseball team dropped its Pac-12 opener Thursday night against No. 2 Oregon State, 2-0, in front of 6,010 fans - the second-largest home crowd for an ASU baseball game since returning to Phoenix Municipal Stadium in 2015.

The Sun Devil lineup was unable to generate much offense off Oregon State's (15-1) ace left-hander Luke Heimlich. The Devils threatened with a baserunner in the fifth, sixth and the biggest threat coming in the form of two baserunners in the second.

Arizona State (9-8) starting left-hander Eli Lingos continued his brilliant start the season. The southpaw allowed two first inning runs, but would recover quickly to silence the Beaver bats and keep the Sun Devils within striking distance. Lingos threw seven innings, giving up just the two runs on six hits while striking out five on the way to his fourth quality start in his first five outings.

Oregon State opened the scoring in the top half of the first inning, beginning the rally with a two-out walk. Back-to-back hits, starting with a RBI-double from designated hitter Trevor Larnach followed by an Andy Atwood RBI-single, resulted in a 2-0 Beavers lead.

The Sun Devils threatened to respond in the second inning. Trailing 2-0, first baseman Lyle Lin and infielder Carter Aldrete drew walks to put a pair of runners on with just one out. Heimlich was able to maneuver around the trouble, striking out the next two batters to keep the Sun Devils off the board.

Infielder Andrew Snow came off the bench in the fifth inning to record the first hit for ASU, but the Devils were unable to push anything across. Heimlich was able to work around a two-out single from Andrew Shaps in the sixth inning, keeping the Oregon State lead at 2-0.

Lingos bounced back after a rough start as he escaped several jams with timely pitching to prevent Oregon State from adding to their lead. Getting stronger as the night went on, Lingos retired the final eight batters of his outing.

Right-hander Ryan Hingst came on in the eighth in relief of Lingos. Hingst proceeded to continue the momentum created by Lingos, throwing a scoreless eighth inning. Hingst came out for the ninth, where he retired one batter before giving way to left-hander Connor Higgins. Higgins quickly retired the next two batters to strand two Beavers on the bases.

The final chance for the Sun Devil offense came in the ninth, with Oregon State closer left-hander Max Engelbrekt on the mound. Arizona State was unable to manufacture any offense in their final at-bat, finalizing the score at 2-0.

Up Next: The Sun Devils continue the three-game Pac-12 opening series on Friday, March 16 against the Beavers. The Devils are expected to trot freshman LHP Spencer Van Scoyoc to the mound to square off against OSU's RHP Bryce Fehmel. The game will get underway at 4 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks. Fans may also tune in to the call at 100.7 KSLX HD 2 or the Sun Devil TuneIn App, available on the baseball schedule page on thesundevils.com.

Notes: Andrew Shaps extends his hitting streak to nine games and has now reached base in all twelve games he has played this season…The nine-game hitting streak matches Andrew Shaps' career-long…Lyle Lin has now reached base at least once in 16 of his first 17 games as a Sun Devil…Coming into his start Thursday, Oregon State starting left-hander Luke Heimlich had walked just three total batters on the season...With a patient approach in the second inning, the Sun Devils were able to draw two walks, creating their first scoring threat of the evening…Eli Lingos has recorded a quality start in all but one of his five starts this season.
