TEMPE, Ariz. -- The 21st- ranked Sun Devils fought hard, but their comeback in the bottom of the seventh fell just short, as they were defeated by Boston College, 3-2, on Monday night at Farrington Stadium.
Junior Breanna Macha, threw a gem for the Sun Devils, delivering five innings of scoreless softball, before the Eagles were able to break through in the sixth with game's go-ahead run.
"She didn't pitch a bad game," head coach Trisha Ford said. "She just missed a couple of pitches, but you're going to have that in a game. There were some choppers that went through, but it is what it is. Obviously we didn't have a lot of balls go our way tonight, we had a couple of hard hits that whent right at people. On the other side, they had some role overs that found holes. It was just one of those days."
ASU mounted the first real scoring threat in the second, working the go-ahead run to third base, but were ultimately unable to bring her in as Boston College's Jessica Dreswick was able to work out of the inning.
"She has a really heavy ball and she hit her spots really well tonight," Ford said. "As the game wore on, you could see us starting to break through, but she kept us off-balance."
The Eagles finally broke through in the sixth when Jordan Chimento roped a two-out RBI single to left center to give BC a late one-run lead.
Following a scoreless home-half of the sixth, the Eagles added two more in the top of seventh, bringing the Sun Devils back to the plate trailing 3-0.
Senior Chelsea Gonzales led off the home half of the seventh with a single and was backed up by a walk that brought the tying run to the plate. Following a fly-out to left, junior Nichole Chilson drew a walk to load the bases for the Sun Devils. Redshirt junior Marisa Stankiewicz who was hit by a pitch in her at bat, scored off a passed ball and, two batters later, sophomore Skylar McCarty cashed in a run to pull within one of the Eagles. However, Chilson was thrown out attempting to go from second to home on McCarty's hit, marking the last out and ending the game.
Leadoff hitter Skylar McCarty was able to extend her hit-streak to 10 games. She, along with Gonzales and Stankiewicz, has now reached base safely in every game for the Sun Devils this season.
ASU will be back in action on Friday when the team travels to Palm Springs, Calif., to compete in the 2017 Mary Nutter Classic. The Sun Devils will begin the weekend with a matchup against No. 17 Texas A&M, before facing Notre Dame.
