SEATTLE – The Arizona State women's gymnastics team (2-6, 0-3 Pac-12) continues to show improvement in the 2017 season, posting a season-best 195.150 with season-bests on three events as well. The No. 17 Washington Huskies (3-5, 1-2 Pac-12) ultimately finished on top with a 196.750.
"I'm pleased with our progress today and over the last couple of meets," said head coach Jay Santos. "It was great to put together a full meet today and avoid counting a fall. We have been putting in a lot of work in practice on handling pressure situations. For each girl to do her job regardless of the situation, I thought we did a much better job with our routines that came after mistakes tonight."
The Gym Devils hit a 49 on floor for the first time this season, counting all five scores at 9.775 or higher. Sophomore Katelyn Lentz hit a season high and tied her career high with a 9.850. Sophomore Justine Callis, junior Nichelle Christopherson, and freshman Mekayla Jones all scored a 9.800, a career high for Jones.
A season-high team score of 48.900 on beam was paced by Christopherson's career-high 9.875. Senior Beka Conrad hit a season-high 9.800 and Lentz and freshman Ashley Szafranski both posted scores of 9.750.
On bars the Gym Devils hit a season-high 48.675. Christopherson led the team with a 9.800, enough for a third place finish and her third score of 9.8+ this season. Szafranski recorded a 9.750 while sophomore Morgan Wilson added a 9.725.
A career-high 9.800 for Wilson on vault contributed to the Gym Devils 48.550 event total. Freshman Jessica Ginn hit a 9.775 for her Yurchenko full and Lentz scored a 9.700.
In the all-around, Christopherson scored a career-best 39.025 to finish in second behind Washington's Haley Burleson.
"Nichelle did a great job again tonight and really came through with four solid routines. Our floor and beam line-ups came through big for us tonight as well. If we can continue to clean up and eliminate mistakes like we did tonight there is so much more that this team is capable of."
Up next, the Gym Devils return to Wells Fargo Arena for a two-week home stand, facing Stanford on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1:00 p.m. MT and No. 4 Utah on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 5:00 p.m. MT. Both meets will be televised live on the Pac-12 Network.
